cessna195
I would like to know if there are any owners of 1909 Pope Hartford model S 5 pass touring cars in the aaca? I have an 09 Pope but I have never had the right body. I am in Sol Cal and would like to get up close to an original body. Thanks for your help.Bill Nance619 876 7538nancebng@cox.net
motoringicons
I remember as a kid a Plez (sp?) Nance from the San Diego area that was active in the HCCA and had several brass cars including some Popes (I think). Toured with them when I was younger. Are you related? JV Puleo
I don't know if this is the model you're looking for... but I remember it as being an '09. This photo was taken on the day the Lars Anderson Museum opened in 1949(?). It was unrestored. I knew the car in the early 70s and it was still (thankfully) unrestored. It was painted a deep maroon color although the paint was dull and the varnish a bit wrinkled.

JV Puleo
BenI think the Pope was registered in NH... I've another picture somewhere that shows the plate.Bill Johnson is gone but his son is still around... he restored the family 3 liter Bentley a few years ago. The Pope I knew was in RI so perhaps it was Johnson's and not this one. This is one of Alden Handy's photos.Joe P

1937hd45
I just love reading posts like this about cars and people in the hobby back in the 1940's and 1950's. I'm the current caretaker of the Elmer Bemis '12 Ford that was on the 1950 Glidden. Bob
motoringicons
Bill- Nice to know you are carrying on with the Pope. Seems like only yesterday when I remember being on tour with your family.
