Sweepspear
This was my Father's. As a kid I recall him telling me it was part of a tool kit that came with Rolls Royce cars. I came across it again going through boxes I brought home from my parent's estate several years ago, and am curious as to what models and years it may have been used. What was it's purpose exactly. It is stamped "Nesthill Made in England" Dale Edited October 27, 2013 by Sweepspear (see edit history)
MarrsCars
It's a grease gun used by several marques, all or at least primarily British. Not sure on what Rolls-Royce applications this represents however other than some did come with these.Correction: As stated above and below my reply, oil is a distinct probability. I have seen these in original packaging that says "oil and grease gun" and they all vary somewhat, some have a wingnut type screw down on the tip, or a t-bar handle instead of the hoop handle, etc. Edited October 27, 2013 by MarrsCars (see edit history)
JV Puleo
I suspect it is exactly what you describe it as, an oil syringe. Many of the components that are commonly greased on other cars were lubricated with heavy oil on the Silver Ghosts and PIs... If thats a screw end, it may have been intended to fit the little threaded nipples on the spring gaiters.jp
Dave@Moon
Nesthill was a very popular brand making these types of grease guns in Britain, probably second to Tecalemet. These were included in factory tool kits, and sold retail as well, from the very beginnings of the industry through the 1960s. Judging by the design my best guess is that this particular gun is likely from the 1910-1930 era.By far most of the guns included in "factory" tool kits used a straight tube leading to the nipple, rather than the bent one here. However I'm mainly familiar with the post-war versions, so this gun might well have been original equipment for an early car. It would take a specialist to research the gun to find out what (if any) car it came with.
DavidAU
It is an oil syringe. All the Pre-war Rolls-Royces (and others probably) had one with the D handle like that in the tool kit. They were issued under various different part numbers for the Phantom 1, 11, 111, also the 20, 20/25 and 30They are used mainly for topping up the oil reservoir in the suspension oiling system. Sweepspear
Thanks for the information everyone.I'm not sure where my Dad got it from. He restored a '37 SS 100 Jaguar in the early 70's, and it seems to me it showed up around the same time. Maybe it was in with the parts he got with that car.
