cahartley
Nothing protects interior corrosion like an antifreeze solution.Over the years I drained enough rusty water from my tractors every Fall. That rust was coming from only one place....inside the engine block.Antifreeze put the end to that......... MikeC5
I am worried about using conventional AF because I've read that if it gets into the crankcase (via bad head gasket or ?), it can damage the babbit bearings.

The engine will seize up due to lack of lubricant. Fix the head gasket. If you are that worried about the condition of the engine, perhaps you should think about an overhaul?
