Guest 41Highlander
Here's something interesting, a Kari-Keen trunk that expands to double it's size. I've been told they are rare, but I don't know to what extent. The ones I've seen (in the many "original" copies of paper ads available on Ebay) are more squared off, or contoured to fit and be bolted to the back of a car. This one is much more rounded, well proportioned and is intended to sit by itself on a luggage rack. It measures 36" x 16 1/2" x 18" high, a desirable size. It's design is somewhere between 1932 and 1937.Would anyone please share what they know about this magic expanding trunk? Does it really have something to do with an airplane company? When were they manufactured or popular, and with what makes of car? Can a value be placed? I appreciate it!
30DodgePanel
I've got a Kari-Keen steering column fan that was an after market item made in Souix City IA in the late 20's early 30's. Made very few planes and auto accessories. Thanks to the depression they only lasted a few years from what my research has shown me. Very rare item, I personally wouldn't sell it for less than $200 minimum but because of the condition and the fact it has all the hardware and original tag on it I wouldn't be surprised to see someone pay up to $500 or possibly higher for it. Just my 2 cents worth. Very nice piece, good luck.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kari-Keen_90_Sioux_coupehttp://videos.siouxcityjournal.com/p/video?id=2355631 Edited June 30, 2013 by 30DodgePanel (see edit history)
Dave Henderson
I have heard that it was a favorite of farmers because 4 milk cans would fit in it when expanded. Yours has obviously lead a sheltered non-farm life, and is a nice find.
Dave Mellor NJ
Here's a Kari-Keen that appears to be made for a 33-34 Chevy or GM by the curve of the tail. It's owned by a friend who wants to sell it.
Dave Mellor NJ
The trunk above is made to sit right on the bumper brackets and matches the curve on the back of the body. There's a cutout for the gas filler on the left. Note the four holes on the lower valance, that's to move the spare carrier which had to be replaced.
