Larry Schramm
I wonder if this could be used to "print" the unobtainium parts that we are all looking for? If NASA is using it for rocket parts, should work for cars. NASA using 3D laser printing to create complex rocket parts - Images Wonder where we could find someplace to test it out. michaelod
I would expect this process to work just fine. Jay Leno has been doing this to create parts for his cars for several years now using a similar system that is well beyond the finances of most of us. As prices continue to fall (and they are as we speak) I believe it will become much more common place. Software that is easy to use will be the key here and it will be a huge market. As people gain the ability to create an infinite variety of parts from their own homes, this will have a greater impact on our society than you might think at first glance, both good and not-so-good.As a side note printing human organs is not science fiction and will become a reality very soon as well. Thanks, Edited May 21, 2013 by michaelod (see edit history)
Mark Shaw
The beauty of this process is being able to resize the pattern relative to the casting shrinkage of various alloys. They are already printing body tissue like ears for reconstructive surgery....

michaelod
A current news report on 3D printing or "Additive manufacturing". Its coming very soon (read now) and it will have a significant impact on our lives across the board; think an early version of the Star Trek replicator. One should be able to buy a 3D printer for under $1K soon and simply download a digital file (pattern for a given part) off the internet just like you would any other file. Send the file to your printer and make that rare part at home with very little effort:3-D printing set to be this generation's 'Moon Shot' moment - NBC News.com
