VintageRacingCar
Hello!I just bought an inline 8 cylinder Flathead engine 1930There is no brand anywhere. My question is....How can I know what brand this engine is? Is it a Studebaker or a Pierce Arrow?Which are the differences between them?I read somewhere, that Studebaker made Pierce Arrow 8s, in the late 20s..THanks!Fred

studerex
The Studebaker foundry cast both Pierce and Stude motors. Give us the casting numbers on the head, block by the starter and the serial number stamped on the front of block. Also Pierce had a squared edge head and Studes were rounded. The Pierce used timing chain and Stude a gear.
studeq
Of course it may be neither, lots of cars were using straight eights in '30. Incidentally Studebaker made three different straight eights a President, Commander and Dictator.
trimacar
Pierce did make one straight eight with gear driven timing, 1931 Model 43. As mentioned, a picture and casting/serial number would narrow down what you have........

studeq
The casting number, K-11-11, would indicate the block was cast on Nov 11, 1931 so it was probably installed in a 1932 model year car.n Not sure which car!
studerex
It's a 1932 Pierce with those casting numbers and timing chain.
