Winfield SRBB Expertise Needed!

Hi out there!

I am looking for an expert on Winfield SR carburetors. We are running a single SRBB on our Great Race Car. (I know the pic shows four, but three are blocked off).

The car runs awesome and pulls very strong on acceleration. Our problem is when we stop. Every stop is a near “panic” stop on the Great Race. If the idle is set properly, the engine dies on every aggressive stop. You can “smell” the engine lean out just before it dies. Additionally, if we happen to be stopping heading down hill, we have a real problem.

While acceleration is important, stopping fast is just as important. Winfield carbs are great at the former, but not so good at the latter. Whenever we stomp on the (mechanical) binders, fuel moves forward in the bowl and the engine starves and dies. We have tried increasing fuel pressure and adjusting float level.

The idle circuit picks up its fuel from the top of the intermediate circuit well. What we think is happening is that the inertia of the fuel in the bowl pulls it away from the spray tube and leans out the engine enough to kill it unless the idle is set at about 1200 rpm (and therefore idle on the intermediate circuit instead of the idle circuit).

We have tried switching carburetors, but the problem persists.

Anyone out there really knowledgeable about Winfields?

Are you aware that there are two type of floats used in the SR models?

Which one do you have?

Try turning your carb around so the bowl is toward the back. I know the installation instructions for most cars stated put it toward the front but on some cars that was not possible due to interference problems. You will have a fuel starving problem either on hard acceleration or deceleration depending on how you mount the bowl. Since braking is stronger than acceleration, bowl toward the rear may be the lesser of evils. Mounting to the side will give an obvious problem of starving on left or right hand turns depending on which side the bowl is! If you were running 2 carbs on a log manifold it would be possible to mount one each way but the linkage gets difficult and sure would look strange!

Have you thought of an anti stall dashpot as used on many GM cars with 4 barrel carbs from the fifties thru the seventies?

Thanks for the comments.

Rusty-OToole: No, that is an idea! I thought Dash Pots worked like a shock absorber, keeping the throttle from slamming shut (and thereby killing the engine). We don't have a problem when the car sits and we rev the engine. That is why we think it is the inertia of the fuel. The throttle slamming shut could contribute to the problem.

tom-in-nh: Yes, I am aware that their were two different floats, one for gravity feed and one for pressure feed. The Gravity feed float should be marked with a "G". Ours are unmarked.

Layden B: We actually have thought about reversing the carb. We will probably try it; The whole manifold top plate can be taken off and turned around, with some "creative" throttle linkage. If that works, we may just make a new top plate and run back-to-back carbs. We did find that the car runs best on only one carburetor for our purposes in the Great Race.

Sounds like you have experience with Winfields!
