Bill Stoneberg
A word about the timing chain on the mid 40's - 53 straight 8. It is not a Chevy motor. Dont line the timing marks on the gears up and expect it to start. The marks (for whatever reason) are 10 links apart. They used to make the chains with copper links to show where to put the marks on the sprockets, now with the repro stuff it doesn't happen. So watch it when you put your engine together.I say this because I have gotten 2 calls today wondering why their engines dont start. Same thing happened to me and its a pain to take the motor apart after its all sealed up. At least I didn't have to pull the radiator like one caller is going to do tomorrow. Also, the distributor turns Counter clockwise when viewed from the top. Mark Shaw
Bill, Maybe a how-to booklet would be in order....
old-tank
This info should be in the service manual since it is in my old ragged Motor's and Chilton's manuals...you just need to read it and as Bill said: It is not a Chevy motor.
Thriller
Nothing is as sound as the voice of experience. Thanks for sharing Bill.
Guest ZondaC12
At least lining the marks up evidently doesn't put it TOO much out of time...I'd bank on piston/valve smashing!
