I just purchased the amazing lead sled hot rod pictured below off of e-bay last week. It is huge, approx. 17' long. The vehicle was built around 1950 with a 1939 Ford stretched chassis. It currently has a flat head 8 in it, though one person mentioned it might have had a Lincoln V-12 in it at one time. The front and rear fenders are off of a late 40's Lincoln Continintal. The front fenders are in fact Lincoln rear fenders turned backwards! The grill is from a 1946-48 Nash. This vehicle has been rumored to have been featured in one or more late 40's - 1950's car magazines. However at this point, that as well as the name of the builder of the vehicle remains a mystery. Please circulate these photos and info with your friends, and feel free to post this on the various hot rod chat rooms and web sites. We will have it at Big Daddy Don Garlits museum in Ocala FL tomorrow. Then the fun begins! Thanks, George Albright, Ocala FL cell 352-843-1624 email gnalbright@gmail.com

""personally i like the car for what it is. i think it definitely is worth a restoration""

THAT IS MY QUESTION..WHAT IS IT?? DRUNK HIIL BILLY WITH A

TORCH DESTROYS A COUPLE LINCOLNS AND A NASH??

SEND IT TO AUCTION, MAKE A FORTUNE, MAYBE SOMEONE FAMOUS

OWNED THE CAR THAT WAS CHOPPED UP TO MAKE IT... OR IS IT A

"WEST COAST THING" THAT A CORNFED MIDWESTERNER LIKE ME JUST CANT UNDERSTAND..

THE YUGO WASNT A STYLE STATEMENT, IT'S DESIGN WAS A BASIC 2 DOOR HATCH BACK ...THE PROBLEM WAS IT'S UNDEPENDABLE DRIVETRAIN.

george, kruse sells cars and dreams, auto mags of the 50s and 60s full of custom cars each one tying to outdo the other in rad (a calif term) design. tryng to track down one is going to be tuff. as a project, again tuff becase many parts from suspention, drivetrain, body one of a kind (you think fenders might be lincoln) all I can say is good luck but thats just my opinion

Jim Hunnewell,Big Daddy Don Garlits chief mechanic, and I spent several hours looking over the amazing lead slead I bought, and posted here last week. We are looking for info. as to who built the car and when and where. We have been told by several people it was featured in Popular Mechanics as a do it yourself kit car, possibly with plans. It mught be on the cover. We believe this occured as early as 1946,and as late as 1955. However it probably was built and published around 1950. It might also be featured in other car, speed, rod, science, mechanic, magazineas as well. The chassis turned out to be from an extremely rare 1941 Lincoln Custom,of which only approx. 600 were built in 1941,and even fewer in 1942,when it was discontinued. It was basically a Lincoln Limo,on a 138 inch wheelbase. It had the same V12 motor as the 1941 Lincoln Contential and Zephyr chassis. However they had 125 inch wheelbase chassis instead. Most Customs had the first year introduced Borg Warner overdrive units, and this chassis still has that overdrive in it,with correct 1941 serial #s on the front of the trans. The tread of this car is also unique to 1941,as 1940 and 1942 treads were different. All of this comes from the Standard American Catalague of Cars by Clark and Kimes. The motor is a 1948 Mercury flathead, and this was determined by serial #s.The wheelbase has been reduced 3 inches to 135. This occured when they Zed the frame behind the engine and in front of the rear axle to lower the chassis.Someone had access to a nice pipe bending machine as there is quality work all over. The outside of the body below the doors has steel sheeting under it,which is welded directly to the frame to give the whole body support. The back hood latch is the hood ornament off of a 1941 Lincoln Custom and Contential. The fenders are all 4 rear fenders off of a 1942-48 Lincoln, with the front ones turned backwards! All in all an amazing authentic lead sled. The car is a very faded tomato red,as we found the correct undfaded paint all over the car. OK guys, thats it for now. We need your help!
