  1. The original design, when properly maintained, worked just fine on my '34 Buick for the past 80 years, and 77 years on my '37.

Why mess with a good thing, especially since the original can be adjusted on the road. The electronic unit cannot be "TINKERED" with into adjustment when it does fail.

just one guy's opinion - it is your car - do what suits you..

  2. When rebuilding the brakes on my all-original 1958 Bel-air in 1979, I went with Dot-5 and kept it that way for 21 years until selling the car in April of 2000 - NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !!!

I did the same for the 1963 Impala convertible with the same positive results from restoration to ultimate sale after recovering from Katrina flooding.

I would go the same way with Dot-5 today if rebuilding a brake system

  3. Just a cool blast of wind out of the North-NorthEast this morning !!

We get a dusting of snow -

    maybe a Quarter-Inch or so,

once every ten years on average...

I do enjoy not having to shovel like I had to do when I was younger in New Jersey, Upstate New York, Indiana, and Virginia.

I also enjoy not getting to work with slush in my socks like when I worked in Mid-Town Manhattan...

  4. The "OLD" directions were to add 4 oz of MMO per every 10 gallons of gas. I still follow that guideline for my cars since I don't know the long term effects of no-lead ethanol (corn) gas. If it costs me a few bucks for the amount of driving I do, well I guess I might have wasted that on having pie and coffee a few times, or buying raffle tickets for a charity which gains more than I will lose. I believe that it doesn't hurt the car and MAY do some good. If it does not help, then at least I feel better about it. I usually but it by the gallon and repackage to travel cross-country with plastic quart bottles.

We drove our 1941 Cadillac more than 3,000 miles between Labor Day and Halloween, using Marvel Mystery Oil, Alemite CD-2's lead substitute, and Star-Tron (for the ethanol gas problems and for long-term storage). The car ran great, and is still doing so. A few years ago I left the gas tank of our 1988 BMW 528e with only ethanol gas and I'm still paying the price with having to replace the tank, fuel rail, injectors, etc -- very expensive.

My Dad always said that on ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure......

  5. We drove the '37 Roadmaster Phaeton 80C home from her storage. We gave her a fresh tank-full of No-Ethanol plus a shot of air in her wide white walls. Even after sleeping for the months we've been on the road, she fired right up and her big 320 ci was as smooth as Vaughn Monroe's baritone sounds, with a bit of Frankie Sinatra's crooning - and you could almost hear the Harry James band harmonizing behind Harry's trumpet rendition of "Carnival of Venice" (page 339 in the Arban's book for you trumpet players!).

Nearly midnight in mid-NOvember, and we're down to 63 degrees, but will stay in the 70s and 80s through the weekend and into next week for some top-down cruising through Cajun Country for some great scenery, winding roads, Bayou-Browsing, and sampling more great food.

Plan to come and visit with us next November, 2015 when the Lagniappe Chapter of Louisiana Region - AACA hosts the 2015 Central Division Fall Meet in Houma, Louisiana - just an hour South-West of New Orleans, and plan to spend a few days visiting New Orleans, our National WWII Museum and Aquarium, the French Quarter (be on your best behavior), Cajun Country, and the beautiful Gulf Coast - just LESS THAN a month after HERSHEY !!

Best regards to our friends who have to put their Buicks away for the winter. - Did you notice the unusual pattern on the Dash Panels?

  7. I also learned that tube protector flaps (for wire wheels) must be continuous, not an overlapping strip. The tube pinches at the overlap. After several pinches, I replaced them all.

In an emergency, I once made a flap from the to-be-discarded inner tube by slicing off the exterior portion and carefully cutting out the valve stem to allow for the new one.

It worked so well that I used it as-is for several years.

  8. We will be there, and have already made our flight reservations - staying from the prior Wednesday through the following Wednesday in order to do some additional touring. Will be back in time to drive to Arizona for the Meet there: March 18-21 - AACA Western Spring Meet and Grand National • Tucson, Arizona • hosted by Tucson Region

  9. When our organist serenaded us with "VICTORY AT SEA", the mood was overwhelming. You could easily imagine the ocean rising and tossing huge warships!

It is amazing to learn that this organ was designed as the most powerful in the world, that it was destroyed during a 1944 hurricane, that it is in the process of being restored by dedicated volunteers (including our own Chuck Gibson), that only about 20% of it is currently functional, and that the next phase of its restoration will require raising donations of an an additional $14 Million. Being allowed to walk through the rooms of wooden and metal organ pipes of incredible size was an experience any musician would find fascinating. While performing for the State Teachers' Convention with the New Jersey All-State Band in that very building during 1956-1959 (then called the Atlantic City Convention Center), I remember learning just a bit about the organ which was then inoperable as a result of storm damage.

  10. Just back home from yet another AACA TOUR - the Founders Tour in New Jersey, and opening a month's worth of mail.

What a nice surprise to find the rebate check from the Sentimental Tour.

Those folks did a fantastic job and we really enjoyed it and appreciate their efforts.

  11. One additional "help" would be to place a comma following a last name to help cut down the possibilities.

I entered my own last name "roth" - and came up with six (6) pages of other last names whose spouses were named Dorothy (doROTHy) -

    so then I tried "roth,"

this ides may help reduce your search from other anomilies

  12. When you use tubes inside, the new radial tires will "squirm" against the paper tags which are vulcanized inside of each tire. The abrasion of these tags will wear into the tube in short order, and will cause the tube to go flat.

Three of my new radial tires with radial tubes (a few years back from a supplier in the Carolinas) went flat within the first 100 miles. I had carried two spares, and STILL had to be flat-bedded home.

It MAY be possible to remove the tags and to smooth the surfaces to avoid this problem, but we did not know of the problem, nor did the manufacturer admit to knowing, despite selling me both products as a package for use on my car - the tubes were considered necessary due to the wire-spoke elDorado wheels. The answer was for me to buy aftermarket wire rims with a gel inside to stop air-leakage.

  13. No guessing here - just who I am....

We have a generally decent bunch here.

I just never cared for the idea of some folks trying to "snipe" from behind a phony identity like they used to do on the CB radio in the 1970s.

You know who I am and what I stand for -- and that I'm pleased to be able to serve AACA, our members, and the old-car hobby in general.

That which is distasteful to you, do not do to another......

  14. David,

You and I have swapped cars going back to the 1970s (and swapped stories that long as well). We've been guests in one-another's homes, and shared many a meal. Our wives are friends. We know each other's children and grandchildren.

It is more through this FORUM that the rest of the old-car universe gets to know what I've known for many years - that you are a fine gentleman and a true friend in the truest sense of the word. I'm proud to have had your friendship for these many years.

    Marty
