Thanks for everyone’s advise with my LaSalle steering wheel problems. I’d like to move on to getting the Steering Wheel replaced, but the Horn Button won’t come off. I press in the Button, turn to the Left or Right and it doesn’t come off. Any more advice would be appreciated.

     Thanks, Dan Bowser.

You can turn the horn button either way.  Press down on the center of the horn button with the heel of your hand as low as it will go and then twist your hand to the left (or right).  It will take less than 1/8 of a turn for it to clear the locking tabs.  Then release the pressure and it should pop up from the spring pressure.  Either you aren't pushing down far enough or turning the horn button far enough.

    LeBaron Bonney?

Hampton Coach and LeBaron Bonney through several sales were bought by Echlers, who decided to stop manufacturing any products inhouse and only become a reseller.  Last month, they scraped all the upholstery patterns.  I don't know if they tried to find a buyer or not, but I know that there are not many people who are interested in getting into the business of supporting our hobby.  Another business supporting our hobby for many years apparently decided to discontinue there 1930-1950's parts reproductions and concentrate on Mustangs only.  There is money to be made out there, I know, I'm out there as a supplier.  I can't find help who is interested in working for a good wage.  We need to find a way to connect sellers of restorations businesses with potential buyers of these businesses so we don't loose the mold, patterns and knowledge of how to reproduces these items.

I need to have my original “Banjo” Steering Wheel restored after a recent failure of some of the banjo style steel rods.

I've never seen failure of the rods but rather the old plastic breaking off of the rods.  If your rods are broken, you need to look for a different steering wheel to have recast.  1939 and 1940 LaSalle and Cadillac used the same steering wheel.  I have several cores in stock.

  5. I found an illustration in the 1936-42 DeSoto Parts List.  Part # 870469.  I also find this part number listed through 1947 in a 1947 parts list.  It looks like a band style clamp that is cut to the length needed.  A similar style clamp was used on the Mercedes 190SL.  That clamp system came with a long roll of the clamp band that was cut to size and then fed through the clamp end and rolled tight.

  6. About 10 years ago, I bought a 1921 Maxwell from a fellow club member who was selling off several of his Dad's cars that he had inherited.  Originally I was told that it was always a North Carolina car.  Later the seller called and had found some additional information on the car including the name of who his Dad bought the car from.  It was an elderly member of our club that I knew in 1985 when I joined the Region.  This gentleman pass away years ago.  I remembered that he had a son in upstate NY and started doing google searches.  I found a possible name on a research paper that was in the same field the father was in.  The research paper included an email address, so I enquired if he was the son and remembered the Maxwell.  No response for a year, then one email from him including a photo of the unrestored car when his dad purchased it in 1953.  He detailed the location and name of the owner of the gas station where they saw the car parked, information on the then owner and details on all the owners back to the original owner.

What a great find!   It appears that I'm the fifth owner of the car.

  7. Great questions, as it has been quite a while since there has been a dual Meet.  Many showing a car in the Grand National will be showing the same car in the National on Saturday.  Some will bring a different car or additional car to the National.  At the Grand National, when going for a First Place Grand National award and you do not receive a First, Second or Third Grand National award and score 350 or above you will receive a Preservation award. You can receive a Preservation award at the National as well.  These are administratively run as two shows taking place at one event, so you will need to register for both events.  The same for Judges, they will have to register for two shows.

Steve, thanks for your reply on the registration question and all of the other replies you have provided to questions from the membership on other threads on the forum. It’s greatly appreciated. Glad to hear you say that “renewing membership is a snap now”. If that is the case, I am still perplexed as to why my AACA chapter in NC asked all members to pay $70 in September for 2024 chapter, region and national renewal fees directly to the chapter and let the chapter submit individual renewal fees and registration to AACA HQ and for members to forgo the new online renewal process you have implemented at our national headquarters. As I stated in my earlier post on this thread (and I am sure you have read it) those fees and registration for our chapter members have not yet been submitted to AACA headquarters despite the cashing of my check in October. Perhaps this is a question better suited for my chapter &/or regional president and not the Executive Director, and I did direct the question earlier to the chapter president and have not received an answer other than to ignore the AACA renewal reminders that was sent to all chapter members.

AACA Regions and Chapters have quite a bit of flexibility in how they operate within the AACA National system.  Your issue is a local one that needs to be addressed with your Chapter/Region.  If you address it in a constructive way and offer solutions to solve this issue you may succeed in creating a change.  Your Chapter/Region requirement is done so that they know that all Region members are also paid members of National.  This is a National requirement.  My Region does the same things, so I am familiar with the process.  Perhaps your Region would accept a printed copy of your online National dues payment receipt sent in with your local dues.  Your Region has to have a process to accommodate AACA Life Member who no longer pay annual National dues.

If online registration is now available to AACA members, that is a good thing, but I am not sure it has become a widespread practice in the club. 4 months ago our local chapter in NC requested all members send a $70 check to the chapter secretary to submit a bundled payment and registration for chapter, region and national dues. My check was cashed a month later, yet last week I received a reminder from national headquarters to renew my membership. Obviously that bundled payment and registration has not been submitted. Talk about an inefficient process!

Online registration is available from the Home page here (AACA.org).  The prior issue of Antique Automobile is available online to everyone and the current issue is available to paid members through the Member Login tab on the home page.  This has been available for quite a few years now.  There is a lot available from the AACA.org home page including Nationals results back to 2014.  Programing is being done now for online Nationals registration payment followed by National Tour registration and payment.
