So I would have to take 100 year old car to Montana or Wyoming  to drive it to qualify for a badge?

Show your car in any AACA National Meet or participate in an AACA National Tour and you will receive the Century Badge.

  2. Don't look at the restoration as one project.  Break it down into smaller sub projects.  That way you will get small levels of satisfaction of completion all along the way.  Viewing it as one project may find you overwhelmed with a pile of parts and loosing interest in the whole thing.

  3. Matt I'm late to the game here, but have you adjusted the brakes based on the service manual with the correct adjusting tools?  In my experience, a low pedal is an adjustment problem, not air in the system or another fluid problem.  The shoes should be adjusted correctly before you bleed the system.   I had a problem with failure on several 1965 Thunderbird (single MC) new master cylinders.  We were bench bleeding them.  The last one I purchased had a warning note inside the master cylinder should not be bench bleed.  Apparently the bore is not machined all the way in and if you bench bleed, you will push the seal across the raw area and damage the seal.  After I bled it on the car, I had no more master cylinder failures.

  4. 1941 Cadillac covers for the holes in the front finders if the optional fog / driving lights are not installed.  This is what you usually see on these Cadillacs.  Very few that I have seen have the fog lights.

But before I buy a car like this, I would like to drive one around to see if I like it. Do you guys know of anywhere i could do that? I live in Myerstown, PA

You live in the heartland of AACA.  If you are not a paid member you should join and join a Region.  You're not far from the Hershey Region and there may be others closer.  You will find plenty of support and local cars for sale that are not ever advertised.  You will find willing people who will let you test drive their cars to determine what you really want.

  6. Just a note on removing the temperature gauge.  This is a mechanical gauge and the line that runs from the gauge to the block is one piece and a sealed unit.  The line doesn't disconnect from the gauge.  You have to pull the line out with the gauge.

Rhode Island Wiring sells the complete harness for this car.  All correctly coded and with the correct terminal ends.

The relay you have a question about is the transmission kickdown relay.  When you floor the accelerator, it momentarily shorts the ignition coil and permits the transmission to downshift to the lower gear.

  7. Show and Judges registration is now open online.  Thanks to the work of our National staff, your show registration can now be paid for by credit card just like Judges registration has been for the past few years.  For those attending both shows, you only need to pay for trailer parking or motor home parking (and Ice Cream Social) on one of the two registrations not both.  Trailer parking, motor home parking and judges parking passes will be mailed about a week before the show.

  8. 8103134947 is a strange serial number.  Maybe a phone number?  Post a photo of the serial number on the driver side A pillar and a photo of the body plate under hood and we can help you.  The serial number will only identify the model as a 1960 Chrysler Windsor, the plant it was built in (Jefferson Ave, Detroit..I think that is the only plant where Chryslers were built.) and the sequential production number off the line in the plant.  This production number is for all Chryslers built in the plant not just the Windsor.  In 1960 Dodge Polara and Matador lines were built in this plant as well.  I don't know if they had their own production number sequence or if they were combined in the Chrysler production sequence.  BTW, there are no "matching numbers" on this car.

  9. In the early 1960's, foam backed cloth was not used as a headliner material.  If you have foam on a perforated backing board that is about 18"-24" wide held up by chrome looking plastic strips, you have all that was originally installed in the car.  This foam was textured and painted, no cloth over it.  Generally, it was an off white, but should match the color on the sun visors.  To my knowledge, no one is reproducing this material.  I have a car that used this material and was replaced years ago with cloth glued directly to the panels and needs to be redone.  My plan, which I have only experimented with, is to purchase the foam backed cloth headliner material and rake the foam side with a stiff wire brush in a uniform pattern across the foam.  It will be rough, but the original had a rough texture to it.  The ribs you make on the foam should run across the car.  Install the foam, cloth side down on the panels with contact cement.  Spray the foam with the color paint you need it to be.  I would use a SEM product as it is compatible with plastics and foam.

Post a picture of what is there of the headliner and I can confirm if it is this style.

I was able to hookup a remote starter  switch from the upper right contact of the solenoid to the negative terminal of the battery and the starter does not turn.

So I am going to replace the starter.

I did a search and found Classic Generators with phone number 817-473-1448. http://www.classicgenerator.com/

Any one know if this is a good company  to do business with?

You're making progress.  Your test shows that either the solenoid or the starter is bad.  To test if it is the starter or solenoid, connect a jumper cable to the output terminal of the solenoid and touch the other end of the jumper cable to the battery.  only one cable is needed.  If the starter operates, the solenoid is bad, if not, the starter is bad.

Have you actually talked to Classic Generators?  It looks like they only service Delco starters and generators.  I don't see anything MoPar related on their site.

Is there a set order to how cars in the Driver Participation Class are parked? Or can you park next to friends with DPC cars that are of a different era or brand?

DPC and HPOF cars are parked in year order, within the award class they are seeking.  These will be assigned spaced at Charlotte.  Also, there are no DPC or HPOF cars in the Grand National, only the National on Saturday.  It will give you a chance to walk around and meet some new people.

  12. Brian, there is not a special rate, so shop around for better prices as other area hotels.  Judges registration will be open in the next day or so and the meet registration open by early next week at the latest.

CORRECTION: THERE IS A SPECIAL AACA RATE AT THE EMBASSY SUITES OF $179.00

Are there any aftermarket steering wheels that I could utilize until I get a refurbished original ?

Your steering wheel is most likely an 18" diameter steering wheel.  The large diameter gives you the leverage to turn the steering wheel so you need to replace it with an 18" steering wheel.  A smaller wheel will be very hard to turn, but may work if you only need one to move it in the garage and not drive it.  I recast steering wheels and have several unrestored 1939-40 Cadillac and LaSalle steering wheels that I can recast on an exchange basis or supply for the customers use during the recasting time.  Contact me and we can discuss.
