  1. The '69 & '70 Rivieras use an electric fuel pump in the tank that is switched off of the oil pressure sending unit. That is why it has the extra prongs.

I would think a sending unit from any other year of 430 or 455 would work though.

Good posting Dale, I was about to attempt to explain the difference !!

  2. The replacement seal may not have the same 'profile' as the original, or the material may be a different composition as you stated. You might be able to adjust the side glass slightly, to eliminate/reduce the leaking problem, but its 'project' that you may or may not want to perform, as it involves a fair amount of worked to access all the side glass adjustment points. The widow adjustments are covered in the '70 Body Service Manual.

The alternative is to stay away from high pressure car washes !!

  3. I referenced the two different 1970 folders again and yes, the Rivirea only folder shows one style cornering lamps while the Full Line Buick folder shows a different style for the Rivirea in it. See below:

Gray from Rivirea only (same style for regular and GS) and the blue is in the full line...

The Gray one (left) is the Cornering Lamp Option.

The Blue one (right) is the Side Marker Lamp only version.

  4. I am also a fan of the wider whites, that are harder to find now.

Diamondback is also another source for this style, in fact they have just about any width WW you want for your classic car.

Thanks for the update on the trim for those skirts Ed, and fenwick.

That '70 'red headed stepchild' is 'slicker' than fresh snot on a door knob !!

  5. Correction - there is a repro part available, thanks to ROA member Kurt Peterson !! :o

Corvette World in Irwin, PA has a Headlight or Wiper Door Vacuum Relay listed for '68-'82 Vettes, and it is the same as the one used in '68-'69 Rivieras.

    Part # 6554, on p. 180 of the online catalogue - $54.95

1-800-327-0185 is the order line phone number for Corvette World.

  6. Good "i" Al . . . once that fender is holed, it's too late to change !! :D

I contacted the seller to see if they know why - they have previously listed and sold some other very nice Rivieras on 'evilBay'.

The reply came back: ". . . no idea, sir !"

  7. Beauty is in the "i" of the beholder - fugly 4 sure !! :D

'70 was the only year 'fender skirts' were offered as an option on a Riviera, and they came in two different styles, 'full' and 'short', which is the rarer, and my preference of the two styles offered.

  8. Welcome to the AACA ROA Riviera forum !!

It's called a 'Headlamp Vacuum Relay' in the '68 Shop Manual. Not sure if these vacuum relays are reproduced, and NOS originals are probably unobtanium' !

Your best source is probably good 'used', and they do show up on 'evilBay', from time to time, from cars being parted out.

They are common to '68/'69 Rivieras, and possibly some other GM makes with vacuum operated headlamp systems.

You can check the operation of the relay by applying vacuum to the metal headlight switch port on the relay. If the relay diaphragm is working, it will switch the vacuum valve inside the relay to the appropriate port.

Trouble shooting a Riviera vacuum operated headlamp system can be a real challenge (...PITA !!), as one split hose end, a vacuum leak, or faulty component will cause the entire system to malfunction !

Replacing those 42 year old vacuum hoses is certainly going to eliminate that portion of the system as a possible cause.

Another item to double check is the vacuum distribution manifold on the lower section of the firewall. The plastic used in these pieces did not age well, and is prone to stress cracks from age, and engine heat.

The '68/'69 Riviera vacuum headlamp system is covered in the shop manual.
