Glenn,
Thanks. Your response confirms my thinking on the subject. I do appreciate it.

1962 Intake Manifold/Carb Interchange
Engine = 394 w/ 4 bbl. Rochester
Question is:
Will the 1963 4 bbl. intake and Rochester 4 bbl. for an A/C equipped car fit and work on a 1962 w/o A/C?.
Here is the carb tag info: The aluminium tag has the 7023051 number along with 'H2" and "62"

In the day I did own a 55 Chevy, and today I do own a 55 Cad. Does that answer the question?

Dave, the following link will give you the history of the Avanti. Bob's Studebaker Resource Website (Avanti Database)
The designation of R1 indicates a non-supercharged Avanti; R2 is a supercharged Avanti; and a R3 is a higher HP output engine with a supercharger. I do not believe that many R3s were built.
I thank you for the Avanti primer on the 3, or is it 5 R's? Now I have some understanding. Appreciate it.
-
Would you Avanti gurus educate me with respect to the RI, R3 thing when it comes to Avantis? Is there such a thing as an R2? I never see it mentioned. What does R_ represent? Thanks.

That is why I am here, to learn. Thanks for that info. Now, I know.D Yaros, Buicks of this era used lug bolts, not studs and nuts.Ben
-
I presume you are talking about the stud onto which the lug nut is fastened? Are they not pressed in originally? Have your friendly/local machine shop pop it out and pop a new one in.

I indeed maintain all my rides myself, be they old or knew. With the new it is much more complicated, and the multi-volume service manuals cost buku bucks, but I enjoy it. What I can't do, I let the pros handle.
-
A good explanation, and a learning experience for me. Thanks!

50's era Austins had them, as well as early Volkswagens. I have always heard them called semaphores.
-
Matt,
I read with interest your OD treatise. Thanks for the info."
I am not at all familiar with 20's era cars. You did state that "If any of this is confusing, let me know because it was confusing to me until I actually started using it, then it made perfect sense," I am letting you know.
How does one "make the 1-2 and 2-3 and even 3-2 shifts without the clutch when freewheeling is activated?" In modern-day cars, even with the engine off, one would need to depress the clutch to shift gears.
-
Is it not just a nut on which the proper size (deepwell) socket will fit?
-
In my experience, the "popping out of gear," most often while under a load, is caused by a defective synchronizer.

Hi Dave,
The car has the factory 2 bbl original matching numbers engine. Really a very
nice car.... Gary
Gary,
Let me ask another question. Does it have a rear speaker? I ask as mine does not and my speaker grille does not have the emblem on it, like yours. I am wondering if the emblem was only on cars with a rear speaker, or the emblem is missing on mine?

Jonny88 traded his Olds for the Ford Fairlane currently shown in his avatar.
Paul
That is sad news.
-
Does it have a 2 or 4 bbl?
-
Scott,
A while with no followup info. Since you are now looking for engine parts, does this mean a) you are keeping the ride, the frame probs have been resolved and c) you will be able to get it certified?
-
I could not sell it, as I do not own it. All I have is the picture!
It used to be that I was the one reviving old threads. Now, it appears that I have been around here long enough that folk are reviving old threads that I have started?

Thanks all for your inputs. I will be posting the book along with a few others i got from an estate on ebay soon.
Thanks again for any and all input i appreciate it
Mike
A followup report on the final ebay sale price(s) would be of immense interest. It would assist all of us in knowing what the market is willing to pay.

As the owner of a 2-post asymmetric lift, used, I will chime in:
- Make sure that the floor between the posts is unobstructed. Last thing you want is to be tripping over raised cover plates, etc.
- Know what the lift costs new, and do not pay to much for it.
- Factor in the cost of installing it. I paid to have my installed. Deemed it a good expense, since each of my posts weighs 1,000 lb.!
- Make sure the concrete floor is thick enough to support the lift with a load on it.
-
I do not dispute what you say. At the same time, I would not be investing what I consider to be big bucks in one of these books, in hopes of making even bigger bucks. Sounds like a risk to me?
-
One of my recommendations would be to get rid of the rubber fuel line running from the filter to the carb, and install a proper metal line, OVER TOP of the radiator hose, as it should be. I can just see that old rubber line rupturing...
Paul
And I can see that "old rubber fuel line" melting!
-
I refuse to believe anyone would pay thousands and thousands of dollars for these books. A few hundreds, yes.
Critical to the value is that all the samples are still there, and in place. Most often they are not.
-
Yes, the floor pan should be the same as on the 88. I do not know that that helps you any, because there are probably fewer 88 owners looking for a floor pan than there are those with S-F's?

Welcome to the Olds family! I am sure, over time, you will find most of what you want/need without too much trouble. I do recommend you join the 2 national Olds organizations: National Antique Oldsmobile Club and the Oldsmobile Club of America. They represent great resources.
Can't beat the 394 engine, in my opinion.
