  2. ...an arcing coil wire. Drove the car last week and heard this ticking sound. I knew I hadn't wound the dash clock. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Looked underneath the dash and saw the coil wire with no connector on it. New connector, no more arcing. The car actually ran fine with the arcing. Question is why did Packard put the coil under the dash integrated with the ignition switch? Is that how they did all of the 20 and 30s era cars?

    car lifts?

Actually if you haven't built your shop yet and you have the room, a used commercial lift is the cheapest and best bet. However they take up more than a single bay in a normal garage. If I had been in this hobby 10 years ago when I bought my house, things might had been different i.e. buying a house with an RV garage or even buying another house with higher ceilings. It's not... fair... my neighbor's have 12' ceilings.
  4. I was quoted from Dayton wheels $800 per wheel to chrome plate.

    car lifts?

If I remember correctly, you don't save much by buying used...at least to the asking price. This Corvette Forum had a few posts about lifts when I was looking.

    car lifts?

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> I never quite understood the appeal of a four-post lift - except for, perhaps, parking two cars in one bay (provided your garage door doesn't get in the way). However, while the area beneath the car is completely open with a 4-poster, the wheels are still under load, meaning you'll have to spend more $$$ for some kind of jack (like those used on alignment racks) for tire, brake, and suspension work. A two-post, above-ground lift, like the Bend-Pak MX-7CP, that provides a clear-floor underneath the raised car seems like a better choice, especially for tranny R&I and exhaust work, but they cost upwards of $3K (or more). Also, the two posts above the ground often get in the way of opening the doors. </div></div> I did a complete rear end rebuilt and did front end suspension work without having to spend a lot of extra $$$. Just need to jack up the tires off the lift using inexpensive bottle jacks and jack stands. It would be feasible in a commercial space, but for the home owner who's projects are not time constrained, is not an issue. Also besides the possibility of parking underneath, the lift can be moved around the garage or into your driveway if you wish. The two post lift needs to permanently anchored in the concrete and needs a thicker concrete floor than is normally used in home garage construction. If I didn't have the $ for a four post, I might have gone the Kwiklift route.

    car lifts?

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body"> Car Lifts ...... Ah yes, That's those Expensive Fancy things, I've seen on TV. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> I only recently traded in my Cinder-blocks for Jack-stands. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> I do have a good A-frame, I built, for pulling engines and bodies, tho. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> </div></div> I figured since I wanted to work under my car, and I didn't trust my ability to safely put jackstands, I felt the $ spent was worth it. I was surprised by the number of people who indicated that they knew someone killed by a falling car. Unfortunately my ceiling is too low to park another car under or stand up but it serves the purpose.

    car lifts?

I have a Rotary 4 post lift. However when I was doing my lift research I did not hear anything bad about Kwiklift. It seemed to be a economical and safe way to get under the car.
  10. I have bought 7 new and one used AC K9 spark plugs which were the spark plugs recommended by Packard in 1932. Any ideas how to restore the base which has some surface rust?

You could adjust the hydraulick shock absorbers with a handle on the steering column"--noted, this sounds similar to Packard's claim in '33. It would be interesting to hear more about this system. Unless something special or materially differnt (not apples-to-apples) can be claimed for a Packard system (such as oil temp control, ride control, and others challenged here) the items will be removed as Packard "firsts." So, Packard people, speak up! </div></div> Packard introduced ride control in 1931 in their 900 series. I have ride control in my 903 coupe roadster.

  14. Let me clarify my statement. All of the people choice car shows that I been to, the sponsoring club does not vote for peoples choice which I agree is how it should be. However what happens is that car clubs (non sponsoring)come to the event and pool their votes together for their members cars. This irks alot of people with nice cars and they stay away from People Choice events. It used to irk me, but I've learned to live with it. Anyway, I've got enough trophies that I can melt them down and make many bars of plastic bullion. My favorite thing now is to go to shows just because I've never been in the town before where the show is being held, or I have never driven that route before. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">t bird man i appreciate the concern however our club members dont vote. their is the presidents choice though. also im glad to see people are collecting our dash plaques thats impressive </div></div>
  15. I was at one show and asked them to turn down the music because you couldn't talk over it. The said they had to play it loud so the people at the far end of the field could hear it. Now that's a real smart show organizer. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Make sure that you have total control of the music being played and how loud it is. Which is to say pick music that goes with the eras you have the show for and it should be in the background and not dominate the space. People like to talk at shows and they don't like to have to yell to hear each other. Good luck with your shows. Post photos for us to see. </div></div>
  16. People Choice shows in the Portland Oregon area have just turned into a car owners and clubs voting for each other and hawking everyone for votes. At these shows I see guys all the time making sure that their car and their friends get votes. I actually like the show where the awards choices are done by the sponsering clubs and especially when they have awards such as "best use of indian blankets". <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I agree with the variety of cars. It appeals to all kinds of interests and makes things that much more interesting. I always liked "Peoples' Choice" Awards even if they are opinion-based. It gives people an input and makes it fun for them to vote for the car they really like. Tie-ins with city and local events helps because people are already in town for an event if it can be arranged. Good luck!! </div></div>
  17. I would put the value at $15-20K.
  18. I looked at the tag on my 32 903 and I hadn't noticed it before, but the letters/numbers are not evenly stamped. I'm thinking that it may have been stamped when the cars where delivered because mine was stamped August 32 which is probably past the end the model year build ,and it also has a 4 speed which was in the beginning of the model year. Halfway through the model year they went to a 3 speed.
  19. When were the data tags of the early 30s packards stamped? Is the date on the tag the date the car came off the assembly line or when the car was delivered to the customer? Also did dealers carry any inventory of Packards or were all cars made to order?
  20. I was considering going to Hershey this October and was wondering how far away could I stay for the night. I was going to combine the trip with some visiting as I grew up about 2 houirs from Hershey. I have friends who live in West Chester which by Mapquest shows to be about 1 hour 20 minute drive. Once I reach Hershey, will I be stuck in traffic for another hour? Also if I was going for only a few days, what would be the best days to attend (besides the dry days )? Since I have never been there, what are the not to be missed events?

It looks like its from where the filler neck enters the tank. This was all new last winter so not sure why it decided to leak after 3K miles of use. Time to drop the tank again and figure out what's going on. I got a lift so that make it easier.

Then I start the projects up in Nov when the rains return. I would imagine in parts of the country like Arizona or Texas it almost the opposite.
