I worked for Buick many years, and offer this conclusion. They sold all cars as "new",or scrap. You would not want a new car which had been extensively damaged, nor would anyone else.

Sorry I didn't put my address in before, mrbuick714@webtv.net I have several torque convertors, plus a lot more. The convertor you need fits 57-63
-
I HAVE A TORQUE CONVERTOR,ALSO BANDS,ETC,IN FACT I CAN GET YOU A FACTORY REBUILT (fROM BUICK). LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU NEED.

I cant find freeze plugs in my Buick parts book. Can someone give me the group number?
-
Hi Joe ! you might read your 1940 service bulletins, where Buick states that they have gone to the four rings instead of the non metallic gaskets. There is much movement of the manifold with respect to the head. When I drove straight eights,I often snapped the end manifold bolts off. Also, when installing the manifold on the head, dont OVER torque the nuts that hold the manifold to the head,if the manifold cant "slide" a bit, you will wind up with a two-piece exhaust manifold !

It seems to have a S.M. transmission on it. If the transmission cover is almost square,it is a 248. If the cover is quite q bit longer than it is wide.it is a 320. Wish the picture were more clear.

Page 24,Buick master chassis book, (dated 1 1 50), Part No.1338454 ring set, !940 -1950 322 engine. One might assume they would fit 52 & 52,but would not find thet in a 1950 parts book
-
Buick did not have an "Eight" until 1931,then in 1936 they came out with the 320 engine which had a 3 7/16 bore. This engine was used up through 1952. This skould help a bit.
-
Harmonics.Buick had some fans on their 320" engines that had,I believe three, regular blades on one side.then a heavy blade across from those. Worked fine !

Installing a new fuel pump fixed my slow wipers

63,good,64 VERY GOOD !

Year,series,and make of carburetor?

I once worked in the same building as did Harley Earl. The "Y" job wae his daily driver. He was a VERY impressive man. I think his influence should still be felt.
-
The newest unit that will interchange is a 52. That would get you an"O" ring in the torque convertor instead of the big gasket.. Use the later style outer retainer instead of the "boot",and while you are at it,change the prop shaft seal and the "U" joint to torque ball lip seal

BoB's Automobilia. He's BUICK ell the way !

I have just helped transfer a 57 A/C.and it was a real stinker.Parts are not available for the hot gas bypass, and we sent the compressor out to a place who does them, and it came back with a wobbly pulley Unless I were a rich person with a show car,I would go the aftermarket route. With luck you might find a 59 under-dash box with Buick label on it,then use a 2 cylinder compressor. They work real fine. I will look for the pulley,it has a wide groove,as do most 2 cylinder compressors. I have taught A'C since 1953.in fact I had the first 53 A/C
Buick in the ares and held schools all around the Kansas City area. You will need a balancer for your particular displacement engine. If you cant find a balancer, try "Wheatbelt"(ad in Bugle)
-
I checked my parts book and found you will have to use a 54-55 balancer. You can then stack genuine Buick pulleys on it up to three belts. The only thing I have,I think I have a cast iron (wide) pulley for a dime-store a/c unit
-
I just went to my parts book and checked. A 264 V8 engine MUST have a 264 harmonic balancer. As I recall, each displacement of the vertical-valve engine has its own harmonic balancer. Check with "Wheatbelt"(ad in Bugle). Ken Reeves could probably help you.
-
Contact Ken at "Wheatbelt" (ad in Bugle) He can probably help you.
-
You will need a harmonic balancer for your engine, then you can stack the correct pulleys on it. If your engine is 322,use a 322 balancer,if it is a 264,use a 264 balancer (54&55 0nly). If you are using an "off-brand" unit, you will need a wide pulley and I may have one. I may also hae a bracket for a 58 engine for mounting the compressor.

Try Bob's Automobilia (Ad in "Bugle")

If your engine has had GOOD oil abd AC filters,(changed regularl) it may not need an overhaul. Check for worn rocker arms and shafts. Too much oil dumped down on the valve spring area can cause smoking. The weak spot in that engine is timing chain.
