1. Yeah you're right. After eight years of the Clinton's killing the military, and then moving to New York (which you know she's probably never there) it didn't sit well. If Arkansas had elected her, or if she lived in New York and didn't hold a political office before she even left the White House, that would've been one thing, but here's a case where she has never lived in this state, yet has our fate in her hands.
2. I won't get into political parties, because there is good and bad on both sides, but I can honestly say that after 8 years of damage that the Clinton's did in the military, she should have gone back to Arkansas. She never was a NY resident to begin with. When you have Air Force One to your immediate disposal to the expense of the american taxpayer, you can cover a lot more ground than a guy from Long Island with fewer resources. She got elected because she was able to make several stops in upstate New York, she appealed to the homosexuals, the hispanics, and the women's rights activists (which covered the city as well). With the way that Guilliani handled the 9/11 attacks as mayor, she could have trouble if the race were run again. Jerry Springer may be a slimeball of sorts, but there's no way he is any worse than what we have.
3. I voted for Rick too and wouldn't know him if I saw him. Hasn't living in New York turned into a nightmarish experience since 2001? Between her taking office and September 11th we New Yorkers now know the true meaning of hell.
4. Just picking on you Wayne. I only said that because of your reputation for having a light foot I wouldn't recommend financing a car, but I'm sure if the car was something that I really wanted to own, and could be had for a song, I might consider taking a loan out if I didn't have the cash. Under normal conditions, I wouldn't have financed that new Harley if I didn't think that I could still afford to swing the payment once I came home. As luck turned out, I was able to pay it off before I came home so by the time I cranked it over, it was all mine free and clear. If you have to finance a car, I'd say a home equity loan is the way to go. With the interest rates as low as they are right now, it might be where you can refinance your home at a lower interest rate, borrow the extra money, and still have your mortgage payment the same and/or less than what you're currently paying on your house now. One of my coworkers just refinanced his house at a lower interest rate, he absorbed the cost of his car loan, dropped off the years left on his house, and still managed to save enough money off of his monthly bills.
5. I know a guy up in my area that bought a '32 International oil truck (he bought it from my father) and painted it up with his company's name on it (he owns an oil business), and wrote the restoration off on his taxes for advertising purposes. I'm not an expert tax man by any means, but if you are a business owner, it may be a case where if you may be able to have a vehicle restored with your company's name on it and do the same thing (but do it tastefully if you intend on showing it). Speaking of which, hey Wayne can I interest you in a '60 B-model Mack? You can restore it and advertise your company. If you don't need the business, just put your ex wife's phone number on the truck so she can get all of the phone calls. Now you know I'm only picking, but I couldn't resist jerking the chain of a trucker from the south. I'm sure you'll find a way of getting me back.
6. There's a guy who sets up at Hershey every year that does this, but I can't think of his name.
7. You still might want a snowmobile suit Wayne.
8. Oh no, I know Pocono is a trioval track. I only mentioned Pocono Speedway because it is the only track in Pennsylvania where the Winston Cup cars run. All kidding aside, there are probably just as many horse and buggies in the Watkins Glen area as to what there is in the area of Pocono International.
9. Was that picture taken at Pocono? Actually if it were dirt modifieds, I'd say it was Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, New York
10. Actually it wasn't Rochester, it was LeRoy, New York. We drive through LeRoy when we're driving to Buffalo for a real set of Buffalo chicken wings.
11. I'm not that sure. I never got that close to them.
12. That's nothing new at Hershey .
13. Speaking of Briggs and his cars: On several occassions, Briggs III has been known to show up to Watkins Glen International Speedway with one of the old cars for Vintage Weekend. Briggs had some neat stuff.
14. Jack Palance? At Hershey? I guess it just goes to show that you never know what or who will turn up at Hershey. It makes you wonder how many other famous people have walked the grounds (often muddy) looking for parts.
15. As big and as busy as that meet is, I'm surprised they got the time and people to put a school on. Had they done that in years past, I would've gone to school a lot sooner.
16. No Howard, you're right about Cal Ripken. The point that I didn't like was "who would pay money to listen to a jock?" There are several people who may have an interest in cars that may not openly display there interests. On another note, due to the large threads that the post generated, another good choice might be have one of the custom builders of the cars that were in Television and in the movies. George Barris, etc. As for the older race car drivers, you might find that someone along the likes of Darrell Waltrip or Buddy Baker might be very entertaining.
17. I'm not implicating strictly Nascar drivers. Of course you have Don Garlits, and some of the older drivers who raced in all of the series back in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's who are easily available. I used Nascar drivers as an example because I know that those three drivers have a love for old cars. But there are also other sports figures that have an interest in cars as well. Cal Ripkin might surprise you as to his knowledge about cars. Of course you have Reggie Jackson, but then on the racing side, you have Former NFL greats Terry Bradshaw and Joe Gibbs who are into racing, along with former NBA star Brad Dougherty. The biggest point is, regardless of the speaker being Cal Ripken, Jay Leno, or anyone else in between, you have to give the person credit who did the work and took the time to make the arrangements to get this person to speak. This isn't an issue of what a baseball player does or doesn't know.
18. Retired baseball player Reggie Jackson has always been known to have quite a few cars, and another big car collector are race car drivers Mark Martin, Ken Schrader and Bobby Hamilton.... just to name a few. TO the defense of those who are making the selection as to who comes to Hershey and speaks, I'm sure if anyone is that upset about Cal Ripkin, I'm sure those people responsible for making the arrangements would gladly accept your help. I guess it comes down to the thought that if you're not willing to participate, don't complain.
19. I am from up north, but you have to remember that in my home state, there are some idiots who elected a certain Senator. Since then we have inherited a certain couple from Arkansas who lived briefly at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Thanks to their presence in my home state, guys are starting to tear out their indoor plumbing, wearing bib overalls, talking slow, and hiding their interns under their desks. Seing how we have a Black Lake and a Black River in upstate New York, maybe we'll have a Blackwater Savings and Loan Scandal
20. 'ya know, when I drawped awf mah Chevee to yew and towld yew thayet I wanted yew to install a lift kyit, this ain't what I hayad in mahnd.
21. With the cost of a tow truck, it is still more cost effective to use the car wash.
22. No you don't want another, and I hope there's no offense taken. It's just that for all of the bad that I went through to get the thing, I managed to get something good out of it. For a long time I swore that I would never live to see the day to be able to come home and ride the thing, and to be able to come home in one piece and enjoy it, is a good thing. That bike served as my motivation to get me through the bad times. There were many days where keeping that in mind kept me going. I remember counting the days until the factory built it, then I counted the days until it got delivered, and then I counted the days until I could pay off the bank and call it mine. The day before Thanksgiving was one of the best days of my life. I got an e-mail from my wife telling me that she went to the bank and paid it off, and then the next e-mail was from my boss telling me to pack up and book a flight home. I'm sorry about your friend. I'm sure with my absence, my father had a tough time doing stuff without me being around. Last year for the first time in 30 years, he went to Hershey without me, and he took a truck that him and I restored together, and he took his Preservation Award. Him and I had the time scheduled to go to the show long before I left, the truck took the awards and I was nowhere to be found. I'm sure had I not made it back, my father would've felt the same way. In a way you are right, it can be perceived as a kick in the head, but only if you allow it. Rather than dwell on it, I put it in perspective and appreciate it even more because of what it took to get it. The past can't be changed, good or bad, but if you can maintain a positive outlook, you can appreciate what you've been able to attain for your services well done.
23. I'll see you in Metropolis as well. Hopefully we'll get the loose ends tied up on our car and grab that 1st Junior. Thanks for the compliment on the car. I still like the old pickup better, but only because I have grown up around the truck, where the woodie I didn't.
24. Yeah I know, I was hoping there would be a more expedient method. If we only going to Hershey, we'd still have time, but in our case, we don't. Either way, it was sent out today and the VP of class judging will have it tomorrow (at a cost of $13). Hopefully if the response is good enough to allow us time to make the changes, it'll be worth the money.
