  1. Original 6 volt AM radio in a 1955 Ford Thunderbird.

I replaced all tubes and have had the radio in out 3 times.

When you start the car the radio will not work the light comes on but no noise, no static, no nothing. If you leave it on and hit a bump it will come on and play fine.

Once on it has never quit on any additional bumps. If you turn the car off for less that 5 hours or so it will come on when the car starts, but it is set overnight or so the radio won?t play till you hit a bump.

    Anyone has a similar problem?

Any suggestions on what to look for?

    Are you AACA Judge?

    If not, why not?

Judges are not paid; actually it cost judge?s time and money to be a judge.

Judging is a thankless job but someone has to do it and the ones who do it should be applauded.

Most judges have an expertise on one area or another, but they don?t always get to judge the type cars they are experts in. At the Jeffersonville show I judged sports cars, I know little about sports cars and no one on our team knew much about them. But I guess were the best that was available and volunteered. Yes judges are called upon to judge a car they know nothing about and they do the best they can. What is the alternative? ?Sorry we can?t jugged you Amphicar because we don?t have anyone who volunteered, who can decode the VIN # ? Get real, AACA deals with an enormous variety of cars, AACA can not judge like a model specific meets, that all the judges have owned the car they are judging and know they inside out.

Next time your at an AACA event look at the average age of the judges, Most were heavily involved in car with all cars went by the engine number, most people didn?t know what a body number (now called VIN #) was. I have had several cars that I had to have the titles changed from Engine # to VIN #s, and a couple I added numbers to, because I couldn?t find any on the car. Older Vin # plates were easily removable and swapped, Amphicar?s are held on with 2 rivets, everybody removes than when repainting.

Most of the newer cars (muscle) that VIN # is critical are brought to the show by younger people? But they are not judging. Why not? Younger People need to get involved in judging and the running of AACA. Then if they want to check VIN # when judging they can change the system and require it.

With that said, the current AACA judging manual does not discriminate against clones, as long as it ?Could? have come from the factory the way it is shown.

I think the system works well given the limitations AACA faces.

  4. A Student in need of money found a good looking cast-iron Chevrolet Power Glide in his dad's garage. It still has the round blue plastic identification/patent numbers tag. He got it out to scrap the aluminum and then noticed the weight.

It would be great for some needing one for restoration.

Anyone knowing what it is worth, or someone interested in drop me an email and i will get you in touch with him. The students are doing auto transmissions this semester so it could be rebuilt and dyno tested ready for installation at additional cost.

If your interested I can get pictures and the numbers off of it.

Are there number so we can tell what it is out of?

  5. I make no claims as to this being correct but the way I always do it is:

Turn everything off lights, heater etc.

I do not connect the 12 volt till the 6 Volt engine in cranking

and I disconnect it as soon as it starts so 12 volts never go through the 6v accessories of the 6 volt car.

I use a jumper pack with an on/off switch so it is easy, if you use cables it is a little harder.

Thanks for the update, I never realized the database was never brought to fruition. I like you thought that was the main function when the class was discussed.

I know a friend of mine was contacted about his 30 Nash by a restorer on the pin stripping location around the windshield, but that car won a National HPOF award maybe that is where the restorer got his name.

It was good seeing you and Sally at Hershey as usual.

  8. I wouldn't take this years judging at Hershey as the norm,

First they were 100 judges short and then with the rain, I bet they went to visual judging.

I remember at I think it was the last show ar Metropolis, I was told none of the cars were awarded HPOF after complaints of HPOF being judged too easy.

After doing some body repairs my 1916 Elgin was not given a repete HPOF at one show and it was HPOF driveline. The paint on my Elgin was done in the 40's it wasn't orginal anyway.

  9. I think you can contact the director of HPOF and request the owner's name of a (say)"1930 Nash" that has an interior certified with HPOF, then you can contact the owner and get pictures or whatever.

It may not show on the car or plaque but AACA know what is original and what is not.

I know a friend of mine was contact about the location of pinstripes on his HPOF Nash.

  10. I see two purposes for HPOF.

1: To help preserve pristine originals.

2: To aid restorers with correct restorations.

If you look at the first one maybe a repaint car doesn?t belong.

But if you look at the second one, who cares. Sure a repainted car would not be any reference for where the pin stripping was out of the factory, but an original interior would be great reference regardless if the outside had been repainted.

The cars registered in HPOF become an enormous reference to correct restorations.

    Hence the name

Historic Preservation of Original Features, not Historic Preservation of Original Vehicles.

Maybe that should be another class. HPOV

  11. I answer all the mail from our AACA region's web site.

I got this today from a man in Indianapolis and wondered if any body could give me any assistance answering it.

"I am looking for information and possibly are there any 1921 H.C.S. Stutz automobiles (in restored condition) that would be available in the future for future events? I am looking for one that maybe was restored as the Indianapolis 500 Pace Setter (pace car) from that year."

Even if we could tell him if any exists.

  12. I'm' glad you responded. I was going to respond, as I have ask the "clone" question at judging school and got your response, not the one "machittome" gave. I am glad a judge with your credentials responded. I think the hard part comes with making sure the car has to correct equipment for the engine it has. RE: with some manufacturers front disk brakes were a mandatory option with all big block cars or certain engine were only available with certain packages.

  13. I would like to give credit and praise to the Hershey judging administration this year.

From the time our captain went in the Giant Center it was less that 15 minutes when he returned with our chips.

We were totally done with judging by 11:00 and we didn't start till 10:30.

Once again "Great Job" and a real improvement from last year.

    Keep up the good work.

Parking is still a problem, but I think they do the best they can with what they have to work with, the rain causes the real problem.
