  1. My Classic Car

I was watching TV the other night and ?My Classic Car? came on.

I don?t know if it was rerun or new.

But Denis was looking at a 55-56 Lincoln Mark I I

with modern (1968 I think?) 430 ci drivetrain in it once owned by one of the Mr. Fords.

Dennis Gage commented on it having an AACA first and senior award.

The owner explained that AACA approved it because the car

was upgraded by Ford at the factory.

Does this sound odd to any of you?

I thought AACA was the way the originally left the factory

Not the way it left the factory 10+ years later as a street rod.

I am going from memory so my years may be off a year or two.

To me this is far worse than the Oldsmobile Toronado in ?Hemmings Collector Car Magazine?.

Does anyone know the AACA side of this story?

  2. If you have a rim expander, I have not had it leave any marks that will show when the rim is on the wheel.

I work from the back and have the screw leg of the expender 180 from the split in the rim and use a rubber hammer to pop it in to place. My rims are 25s and my expander barely goes out far enough. You may not need a hammer.

I don't think it is a clincher. I have always called it a Firestone type or detachable and people always seem to know what I am talking about.

  3. No neither, one was mine A lady I worked with retired and moving the FL.

She had the cars in her barn. She bought the Mustang new. She said she had a guy who was going to do a total restoration on the Mustang for her. I ask her is she knew how much it would cost and she said the guy told her between $25-30 K so I think she was serious about restoring it. They were selling the farm she said the money to redo her Mustang was coming off the top and she was going to drive it in FL during her retirement. Nice little Mustang 1967 V8, convertible, loaded, no rust.

The old Chevy belonged to her neighbor who drove it daily till he got too old to drive. Her husband bought it in 1988 for $900 so that is what he wanted for it and I sold it for her within a day. Really a rust free car.

  4. When we were at the Dublin OH National meet I was talking to my daughter around an old wrecker. I mentioned that there was an old winch like the one on this wrecker up on and old trailer at her grandma?s house. The owner of the truck heard me and asks if I wanted to sell it. I told him it wasn?t mine but I?m sure my mom would sell it if someone wanted it it hasn?t been touch in 40 years.

He asks me to take some pictures, will the first chance I got was Thanksgiving.

    The photos are at:

I think it is off of an old ford AA wrecker my dad used to have at his Coal yard for moving coal shoots around. I did not see any name on it anywhere

I have no idea what it is worth or even if it is worth a 500 mile trip with the tools to remove it from its 50 year perch.

Anyone have any idea what it is worth so I'l know what to ask and someone doesn?t take advantage of my 84 year old mother.

  5. You?re correct I meant to say "without" spare.

Depends on when the car won it senior there was lots of confusion on radial tires in past years.

Lots of judges considered radial tire did perform the function the factory intended the tire to perform so they could not take the maximum deduction.

So deducted 1 per tire, some 2 per tire even acceptance as a safety item by some judges.

As with any judging it can not always be objective.

A lot of judging is subjective.

Then you have the issue of knowledge base of the judges.

I would personally have no idea if the red on the Toronado was the right color red or not unless someone told me it was wrong. Not many owners are going to volunteer that information. There is a good chance no one on the team with enough knowledge to say for sure it was the wrong color.

I have been on both sides when I show my 1955 Thunderbird, judges know where every spot of paint overspray should be and judging is tough. When I used to show my 64 Amphicar, most judges had never seen one and no one would question incorrect color or other minor changes. So judging was easier on that car.

AAAC judging may not be perfect, but it is the best I have seen.

  6. Someone can chime in and correct me if I am wrong but it is my understanding, from being a judge and the manual that non-original color of paint is a 10 points mandatory deduction not 40 points.

40 point Non authentic is non authentic body parts like fiberglass fenders.

So a car painted the wrong color could get a senior.

Tires are a max of 3 points so with spare that 12 points total

    so

    400 -10 is 390 -12 is 378.

378 is a senior car. With 3 points to spare.

So a car with radials and the wrong color can win a senior.

  7. On a separate rim/wheel there is no removing one side?

you take the rim out from inside the tire both beads at the same time.

If you have a screw type tire changer you and do it from the back without leaving any marks that will show. Just make sure when you expand the rim the tool in an area that will be covered by the wheel.

  8. The owners/operator manual for my 1916 Elgin said to check main bearing clearance.

Grab on to the crankshaft if you can move it up and down the bearings are too loose, remove one or more shims from under the main bearing caps, If you can not crank the engine with the hand crank the bearings are too tight, put shims under main bearing caps, recheck at 200 mile intervals

That is on a splashier system with 3 main shell babbit bearings.

  9. Glad to hear you?re on top of things.

I have been at events where someone read about it in the paper and decided to drive over and enter, only to be disappointed.

Looks like you have some nice Mopar muscle.

I sure you will enjoy it there is nothing like Hershey.

My family drag raced Mopars in the late 60?s till about 71 or so. We were mostly small block people 273-340?s with a few 383/413/440 here and there in. Never raced the Elephant, my dad had several of the late 50?s hemi 300 cars when they were new.
