  1. I'm a card collector primarily. The hobby has gone insane over the past few years, since the pandemic started. Boxes of brand new cards which were overpriced at $85 are now MSRP at $600.

People who collect because they love the hobby are being forced out by flippers who don't even know who the cards are of. There are many instances of people posting videos and not knowing how to pronounce the players names.

Most of us who are long time collectors are really looking forward to the day when these flippers move on to something else and the hobby goes back to how it should be.

I have my own website documenting my collection. cardboardhistory.fotki.com. yes, these are automotive trading cards and yes, they are on there.

I've been collecting since 1988 with no breaks.

I'd like to offer an alternative. Don't repaint the car. If the rest of the car looks as good as what you've shown us, a wash and wax would do wonders. Same with he interior. Unless you are doing the work yourself, you're going to find a repaint and new interior a very expensive endeavor and you have a very presentable car.

This is the best advice. The car looks fine, and your grandfather actually applied this paint himself. Preserve it and you are preserving a piece of him.

  3. I just crossed the Bear Mountain Bridge for the first time in January, and crossed Kingston-Rhinecliff for the first time last year. It's funny, they are so close but I never went across them because Newburgh-Beacon and Mid-Hudson are closer.

  4. Very cool. I love the architecture of the George Washington bridge but surprisingly I've never been across it. One of only two major Hudson crossings I've never made, the other being the Rip Van Winkle bridge from Hudson to Catskill.

I've crossed the Newburgh-Beacon and Mid Hudson bridges more times than I can count. The Newburgh-Beacon Bridge is about 15 minutes away from me. My brother crosses it every single day of the week.

  5. If the information is already there and still relevant there's no need to reinvent the wheel.

It keeps information about whatever the topic it is about together and easier to find.

Many rehashed threads end up with just a link to a previous thread about the topic that was already covered.

It could preserve the knowledge of a person who has passed away that would otherwise not be available because the person who had it is no longer here to share it again.

Information that was documented closer to the event happening is more accurate than later memories as other bits of knowledge crowd the minds of everyone over time. This is perhaps less relevant on a classic car forum than some other forums since the majority of the cars discussed predate the forum, at least for a couple more years.

Honestly, there is very little reason that a new thread should be started. The one place I can see the reason for a new thread is in Buy/Sell/Trade forums, or BST. Although even there it could be useful for researchers to track and create at least a digital paper trail.

  6. Thanks for the comments. I didn't realize it was still so prevalent. I am surprised I didn't notice it in the past since I love to watch the snow and watch cars driving in the snow.

My dad was a USPS employee for the last 20+ years of his life, making the trucks go. I'm surprised he didn't mention it.

How late in the year is it required out west? I've never been further than Joliet Illinois, yet...but that will be changing this year.

  7. I was not able to get a photo but as I headed out to the dentist this afternoon I saw a postal employee putting chains on the mail delivery trucks' tires. I don't recall seeing this before. I know chains were in use in the 60s but I thought that they were out of use.

Is this a widespread practice that I just didn't notice before or something unusual?

They are predicting 8 inches of snow and a mix with ice for today here in the Hudson Valley NY. It's already started actually.

  8. Our family daily driver is dark metallic red and my brother's car is light metallic blue. The last red car we had was a Chrysler Cordoba...blue has been the predominant family car color. I can remember 5 blue, 2 red, 1 white and 1 metallic orange. Have pictures of 1 green but don't have any memories of it. Most of our cars didn't last that long... considering I've only been alive since 1984.
