  1. I was reading up on dual point conversions and came across electronic kits. Looks like they're available for 6 volt L8 engines. Anyone have any experience at these? They sound good and I like the way they're more or less hidden under the cap. Could they improve performance or just cause issues? What say you?
  2. Good to hear! Where does one acquire dual points? I have a few gremlins hiding around and I'm wondering if this would help get some of them out.
  3. I'm fortunate to be a 30 minute drive to the border. I have everything shipped there. Duty is 13%. If I can keep it under $100 they usually say "have a nice day." I'll bring my yellow lab for a buffer....makes the meanest border guard smile. The only thing that kills me is our exchange rate if something is a high dollar.
  4. Some comments remind me of a used Class B camper van I bought two summers ago. They are very sought after and their prices are ridiculous. I spent 2 years before that researching and pricing on them, never knowing if I'd ever find or even own one. I looked a few pieces of sh** over the years and carried on. Until that one day I found one locally. Bought it on the spot. In great shape and I could easily double my money spent, but now's the time to enjoy it. Patience can really pay off sometimes.....
  5. Another less interesting find as I'm sure other have, when I removed my front seat to do floor work and placed it on end, it sounded like one of those rain sticks. It's a hollow stick filled with granulates and when you tilt it from end to end, they slowly trickle down making the sound of rain. Sounded weird coming from a seat. Of course when I placed the seat back down, the dried up kernels spilled out onto the floor. I still find a kernel or two the odd day.
  6. Haha I hear ya! I did run into that problem when I wondered why my brake lights didn't work properly when I got the car. Thought maybe it was the hydraulic switch and because I was changing the entire brake system, a new switch would be in the works. After full installation my brake lights still didn't work. It turned out to be a faulty NEW switch. Bought another and haven't looked back.
  7. The system is 6 volt including all bulbs and flasher. Wiring is in good shape and all connections are clean and tight.
  8. Thanks for sharing! There are a few on ebay and a couple are "heavy duty". I''ll order another over the winter and give it a try. I'll post any results. Cheers!
  9. I've always been curious on this one. When I first got my car, my turn signals seemed intermittent, a bit sporadic and just didn't seem right. I purchased a new P229D flasher and it's been working since. But they still have a very short flash which is kinda hard to see. Hard enough that some idiot honked at me from behind and went around me while I was waiting to turn left last summer. I don't think he could see my turn signal on. I realize these cars aren't the best in lighting but I'm still wondering if this short flash indicator is indicative of this era or maybe there's a better flasher out there?
  10. I did the same as well and mine now starts like a 12 volt.
  11. I also had an insurance invoice from the early '80's from Minnesota with a name on it. I was able to message a woman who confirmed she owned the car and it was her grandfathers. Maybe this was him? Thanks for those little tid bits on this town. I love hearing the history on such things.
  12. Just the usual stuff...match book under the carpet, bobby pin in the trunk and an old pencil that rolled in the recessed under seat heater. This also wasn't glamorous but wasn't expected folded up in an envelope.
  13. Yup, clean everything up nice and shiny. Maybe just the bigger cable were enough but someone told me you can't have enough ground.
  14. I was the same as you. When I switched to bigger cables for my straight 8 I also ran another cable from the frame to the starter. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't hear it for myself. Cranks awesome. No regrets.
  15. Thanks. I've been watching these and thinking it's a lot cheaper than professionally done. Mostly time and labour.
  16. Good to know. I got a quote about a year ago for a full restoration and it amounted to about the price of the entire car. Gulp.
  17. Does anyone have or know where I might find a steering wheel for my '54 Pontiac Star Chief? Not sure what other years fit. Winters are long and cold up here and I'd like to try a resto on one over the season. I don't want to use mine in case it's a disaster job. I'm not looking for any of the chrome. Thanks!
  18. Is it just not starting now? When I first got my car I had cleaned/rebuilt the carb among many other things. It was pretty gunked. Also rebuilt the fuel pump, parts were breaking down in there too. I could start the car and drive around the neighbourhood. The next day it wouldn't start. I had made sure I changed the fuel filters...both of them. I found that odd. The carb was getting fuel so I tore the carb down again. It was full of crap. I cleaned the carb again, started and went for a spin. Same thing the next day. I figured there must be an issue in the gas tank. It looked like WWII in there including the sending unit that was seized. The sending unit had the sock cut off maybe for better flow. New fuel system and I haven't looked back. I also now know why there were 2 fuel filters in the system. One before and one after the pump tsk, tsk...
  19. Just curious, have you checked the shoe adjustment from the adjustment screw first? Sometimes that's enough before having to do the anchor pin adjustment.
  20. I was travelling through Grand Marais MN and spotted this at a garage so I thought I'd take a peek. Plates were North Dakota 1972. It's in pretty rough shape but still catches my eye. Has the glass behind the seats with cabinets. Sure would be fun restored. I'm guessing 1955 Superior Pontiac? Anyone else got any tid bits on this old beauty?
  21. I use a Meguiar's kit that attaches to a drill with a bottle of their polishing compound. Does an amazing job!
  22. Just to throw in my 2 cents. Even though it may not be the same vehicle or year I just wanted to share. I have a '94 Class B camper van that started to mimic a transmission problem. It would shake in overdrive or when acceleration was needed. It also kinda ran crappy at idle but with all these problems, still got me around. I had changed everything but the plug wires so I did that couple weeks ago. Amazing! It starts without hesitation, has great acceleration and the transmission runs flawless. I would have never believed a $65 difference in performance.
  23. It's always nice to see your car from a distance rather than a foot or two away for months on end. I find myself parking in a parking lot as far away as possible....not to protect it from getting scratched but to take it in for the walk back. Sharp lookin'!
