  1. the 27 i'm working on the previous owner had the sills and firewall supports replaced that was red oak, the upper wood which is original definitely looks like oak but its primed when i prep for paint will know more on that. i coach built morgan english sportscars for 7 years and all the wood was northern ash mostly from maine, they had depleted their supply by the 50's in europe of any hardwood occasionally we would get a pre war car to restore and we would find shaved bullets from the sawmill in the wood this was a good indication the wood was definitely from europe lot of lead flying with two world wars in those woods. i remember the morgan factory rep once told us a story how he was horrified when he learned from his supplier in maine that ash was also one of his favorite woods to burn in his woodstove...haha. you dont appreciate what you got till its gone.

  4. congrats your car is awesome i actually tried to buy that good score, is the engine complete are all the parts there? i think i recently read while researching my 27 they called the radiator design "gothic"
  5. i found this pic on the web looks like an earlier than 27 however same waterpump oil pump and generator configuration as mine. my engine cast date is 9-27, one of the last 400 built for 27 according to a old letter which came with car from the antique studebaker club in the 80's. looks like a straight shot to the bottom tank on the raditor
  6. the hose would have to take quite a Uturn to make it back to the passenger side to reach the water pump
  7. does anybody have a pic of a late 27 lower radiator outlet and hose configuration , the radiator that came with my 27 unfinished project has a lower outlet which exits towards the drivers side of the block. its possible the radiator is from different year or? the previous owner since 79 i believe received the car disassembled also, he had a temporary radiator from a 63 Chevy in place to run the engine. i will be mocking up the car soon and bumped into this today. the pics attached show the configuration the outlet heads to the drivers side at least 5"
  8. that is a sweet survivor nice find! is it original paint or has it had a respray in the past, if original are you going to preserve or go the full restoration route. dont see many chevy coupes around these parts. nice car.

  13. Well i just bought my first Studebaker it's a 27 Standard Six EU 4dr Sedan. Brand new to the Studebakers, i've only done model A's and Morgans from this era. I just started researching them in last two weeks and i gotta say i took a shine to them right off the bat, they are alot bigger than the A's and a little neater in my opinion. I lucked out and the first one i looked at was a good one, a unfinished restoration that the owner put alot of time and money into over the last 4 decades it just stalled out in the 80's when it came time to finish body, interior and assembly, very well cared for kept inside, heated garage. The engine has already been rebuilt done in 1982 by a local ol'timer mechanic long since passed, bored out, rebabbitted, aluminum pistons made, started right up and she sounded sweet. chassis completely rebuilt from bearings to brakes, blasted and painted also and still looks dam good, enuff where i think it just needs cleaning. tranny done new clutch, exhaust, new tires, the owner told me "its been on jack stands since i bought the tires but once in awhile i would need to take it down and swap bays give me an excuse to drive it". Lots of parts already re-chromed, brand new safety glass, new aprons were made, many parts were sent out to body shop and restored and painted black, gauges and cluster sent out restored calibrated and refaced. I had a BIG smile on my face as we went through all the parts and history on the car, he was a really good guy and treated me fair, and you could tell how much he loved the car. The body is in pretty dam good shape all the lower wood has already been done he had a local cabinet maker duplicate all the pattern wood, upper wood is in outstanding shape. Sheet metal wise he had a body guy in the 80' patch the cowl and rear quarters i was able to see the repair from the inside and its passable from what i can tell he made lap joints for the welds i would have butt welded it but i think i'll let it stay as long as it looks good when i strip the application of mud off. The Front doors he patched a 6" piece across the bottoms and tried to rebuild the lower inner door this repair was out of this guys skill set and i will do over and reskin from just below lower door bead theirs a massive stretch and buckle on both doors at lower hinge area anyways probably from doors swinging open or frozen hinges at some point. rears doors are very nice no rust through, the whole body was blasted and zinc chromate primed back in the day also. Front fenders and rears are outstanding they have an initial strip of paint and zero rot i was pleasantly surprised, the running boards are missing i don't think he has anything for pattern or reference so i'll have to do some research on that. The Hood is 75 to 50% both sides look nice and straight no rust through one half of the top will need replace if i can find one or i'll have to make a new one, would be a fun project but time consuming, the other half i think is good will need a better look, center hinge is toast. Radiator looks very good, shell is nice not damaged the nickel is old and patina-ed but not horrible. will need complete interior but i have patterns, also came with new vinyl top and cotton padding. So overall i have a real nice head start certainly better than starting with a complete roach, a lot of time and money already spent. Biggest challenge will be its all apart and another new Marque to learn, and from what i can tell not having the luxury of doing a model T or A where you can open a catalogue or website and get almost any part bumper to bumper! i was going to drag the car and parts home today but it doesn't look like it will ever stop raining in Massachusetts till august! Brightside it gave the owner over a week to gather all the parts they were literally in three different garages and in his house, all well protected and stored but definitely a concern for me. So follow along while i try to bring this old girl back to her former glory, i attached some pics of when i bought the car in Connecticut as it sits, not the best photo shoot i was to dammed excited to take good ones! and as you can see by pics of the firewall the dam thing makes coffee too!

Hi all new member to AACA, and the forums. what led me here is we recently lost our beloved mother, she lived a long wonderful life. and she was a car gal from way back. when it came time for the services we honored her with a grand traditional irish funeral and mass, music, lots of green flowers, bagpipes the whole nine yards. when preparing going through old pictures etc., i came across "her plate" i had restored her 74 maverick probably 30 years ago now,she loved it two tone white and blue , blue vinyl top and new blue interior. i had made her a hand lettered front plate in gold leaf with simply "Gram" i knew i had saved that plate, it went on to her next two and last car before she stopped driving, everybody knew and remembered that plate. i decided i would mount the plate on my buddies 1930 model A i had restored probably 8-9 years ago she loved that car and had always told me she wanted to go for a ride in it when her legs got better. that never happened so i took the A to the wake where every body could see the plate and car and i led the funeral procession to bourne national cemetery, one last ride. when it was all over i couldnt get out of my mind i wanted to do a 27 in honor of her birth date 4-19-1927 and give the plate a permanent home to be mounted. i figured what a great way to honor her, pass the car to my kids then theirs, and when the story of gram's 27 will be told her memory lives on and not forgotten. so now to the car! i started looking for 27's had a couple appointments to look at two T's, them i bumped into a 1927 Studebaker EU 4dr sedan. the more i researched the Stude's the more i wanted one. i cancelled the T appointments, i was lucky i picked up that 27 in Connecticut , a unfinished project that had been well taken care for 4 decades by this previous steward. the car had alot of work done to it back in the 80's then stalled when it came to body paint and interior. engine rebuilt by a local old timer long since passed, complete rebuild, bored, aluminum pistons, babbitt etc etc. chassis completely rebuilt from bearings to brakes, tranny, clutch, new tires up on blocks would only set her down when switching bays in his garage. she fired right up sounded sweet, lots of chrome already redipped, rebuilt refaced gauges, new glass, restored and painted parts i was impressed. wood has been done lower only top wood is in outstanding shape, some metal work on cowl and rear body all which i inspected and will pass, lower front doors will need to be done over it was out of the bodyguy's skill set back in the 80's i will reskin them from lower bead down. overall i couldnt be happier, only drawback i didnt take it apart and this is my first Stude so a learning curve is expected, but we've all done it before. so far all parts are supposed to be there with exception to inner door handles he never received them with car. so this 27 has a new proud owner and a new name, from now on it will be "Gram's 27". she raised 7 children i'm the youngest, 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchild's. the last 30+ years of her career she was a professional nanny and raised two additional families children basically from birth to college. known by so many as gram. sorry for the long rant but it's another car story and it's how i got here, looking forward to getting to know the studebaker family. if it ever stops raining in mass i will be able to bring her home!
