I would say that it depends on when the repairs were made.

Before the stock market crash of October 29, 1929, probably most repairs were made with OEM or period parts.  After that to WWII, there was limited amount of money and anything available that would make the vehicle run was used.  Hence the term "bailing wire and a pair of pliers".

Also old cars of the era were never expected to last more than a few years, especially 20-40 years.

    Example of depression era migration.

well used and well worn, tough times and we think we have problems

  2. had a Tom-Tom for quite a few years thought it was great, loved the voices i had C3PO for the kids for fun, then Tom Tom told me that i was restricted to the Northeast maps because my memory is so small, and now my son now lives in Virginia and that is not part of the Northeast.

used my phone for a few years, still do on local trips for traffic and such, but coming out of New Hampshire Speedway stuck in traffic a few years ago had no reception for my Droid phone or my daughters Iphone to map for us, could make calls but no working maps for about 5 miles. didnt like that

decided then to buy a True GPS a Garmin at BJ's and am happy i went back to GPS for non local trips.

both have their downfalls but this is how i roll at least for now

and all of us have pondered with no answer but 60's had either green or black springs on hood hinges so pick your color and

hinges i believe are silver cad.

sorry to here about the house damage

please keep posting with pics of your progress

i had my 60 apart (no a/c car) for many years and while putting it back had the opportunity to get an a/c system out of a donor car

until i found that i would have to torch out a third of my firewall and weld in from the donor. TO MUCH WORK

so real interested in how yours works out

is the magnum unit heat and a/c???

    "1991 radio not working" MRJBUICK

I am not saying this is your problem but it was a strange one for me. My radio was dead but before the battery went it was crackle and popping and mine is a 91. It is pretty easy to pop out the radio so disconnect it and one less thing to worry about while diagnosing. You might get lucky.

    Just an idea good luck

  6. Over the weekend I pulled the radio started checking the pins in the plugs, I was getting power at the plug but the car had sat for a week and the voltage was only 10.2 so it was low. Hmmm

I have a Delco radio tower I got out of a closing Buick dealer years ago so I checked and I had a 95 radio in it that I put in the car and everything worked and played pretty nice see pics below. I am going to live with the radio for now.

NOW I tried plugging the original Reatta radio into the tower and smoke starts coming out of the radio.

So I think the radio had a short and was draining the battery and probably killed the old battery . Thank God I found it.  As of tonight 3 days sitting voltage at 12.32 so I think I am fixed. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

would love to know who ordered this one

my parents first new car was one of these with the "pink" interior or rose color

my first car was one of these, paid $35 for it couldnt kill it, lord knows i tried, i loved that car

    62's  are great cars

always loved the dash one of the best Buick did

would like to see more body pics, could tell a different tale

The amp/tuner in a 90-91 is the same as the 88-89, just packaged as a dsingle unit. If the dial is not even lighting then it is not likely the amp (unless +12 is shorted). If totally unresponsive then I'd check for power first. Do you have the pinout ?

The radio has no display or anything so i will pull the unit to check for power

if the pin out is in the service man i should have it

if it is not then i could use it

    thanks for the advice

  9. My radio stopped working after my battery died on me

i replaced the battery with a new one and everything in the car works fine Except the radio and the antenna doesn't work

1 assume the antenna isn't working because it is not getting a signal from the radio

i checked the 2 fuses and both are good

the radio had the popping sound before this happened

i am just curious if there is anything else i should be checking before pulling the radio out

Just the common blue bottle.  The original can in the 1960's had directions for transmissions and it has never caused any problems.  In fact when I recalled all of the ways I treated a dynaflow to my mentor, in this instance he said he and others used it all the time if needed.

    Thanks for the info

  11. my Gage of choice would be a Milton s-976

i have a prior version that's been my workhorse for years

it is like the ones you would find at the service station's years ago

its about 12 in long so not easy to loose but doesn't fit in the glove box

What you call parasitic loss may be slipping.  Again a tachometer will help.  I doubt any small change in viscosity of the fluid would be noticeable unless lots of Lucas was added making it harder to turn.  I use STP in mine to slow leaks and torque converter drain-back...up to 2 bottles makes no difference in performance.

Pinging?  probably related to last load of gas, cylinder head temperature (over 200*) and/or low humidity.

Clutches slipping due to loss of friction materials in old fluid?...try low and reverse which do not depend on the clutch pack.

when you say that you use STP is that a special transmission STP???

Im generally the same as you when it comes to stuff not being hooked up right. I struggled with the carb for a long time and could never get it to operate properly when the secondaries would come in. I tried adjusting the air valve to slow dons, speed up , jetting at all different levels. It just seemed to loose velocity in the intake when the secondaries opened up and I couldn't tune it out. That coupled with the fact that it runs so good with just the primaries and in reality I cant see my setup needing more than 375 CF< (heavy car, dynaflow, older engine, etc.

it is possible that the car is looking for the extra from the secondaries when under that kind of load

375 cfm is small, Nailheads like carb i understand your thinking but you might be defeating yourself

in that situation a 2bbl would probably be wide open so why not let the secondaries help out

just another way to look at it

When I start my 57 Special cold it makes a loudish exhaust leak noise. With the hose in my ear stethoscope I've traced it to under the intake manifold. When the engine warms up the noise pretty much disappears (heat riser opens??). Seems to me there is a largish sheet metal plug on the bottom of the manifold. I'm guessing the plug has come loose or gotten a hole.

    Two questions.

Does this sound like a reasonable supposition?

    Does someone sell replacement plugs?

    Thanks ..........Bob

you are correct the steel plugs on the bottom of all nailhead motors rot out the intake must be removed and the plug replaced

i believe that CARS carries the plug and i have seen them on ebay

be aware there are different sizes for different years

  15. I have to admit that at first read i was very skeptical at the idea

after reading through with the answers given i have a different outlook

will it work? who knows! but then again the only thing i can tell for sure is  we are not having a car show this year.

sometimes especially under unusual circumstances things that are unusual work better.

thinking outside the box right now is better than what we have and i'm all for it, will i be able to make both? i don't know

i am not retired and like said above that is quite a bit of time off and for me our extended family does a vacation together in late July.

would i love to do it with a road trip with a bunch of Buick's in the middle, ABSOLUTELY!

we definitely have enough notice and who knows maybe this might start something new

kudos to the BCA and NMC for taking the chance, we older folks don't like change so sometimes its better to force it on us  lol

GOD willing i will be at one for sure, hpefully two

where was that dinner going to be lol
