Silver interior is the "cat's meow!"

    Pat,

Right now it is only a purr as the previous owner reupholstered the seats in white. It is an attractive combination with white, silver and black. I get many compliments on the interior. My wife has told me she will kill me if I redo the seats in silver as they were originally. I am a stock purist at heart and will get them back to original. Don't tell her please.

It is doubtful that you will find one.  They weren't common back in the day.  You may find a tag under the back seat with a trim code for the upholstery but that is not a build sheet.  A window sticker and protecto-plate are more common.  You can determine some of the factory installed options by de-coding the data plate on the firewall.

Here is an example of what Pat is talking about. This is the tag I found behind the back seat of my 1963. Riviera=747 with 726=silver interior.

  3. Hi,

I was at an estate sale today and found an unopened package of headlamp lenses for the Oldsmobile Viking. It appeared to contain 4 but, was unsure as they were still wrapped in the original cardboard package. I have a collector car myself and know how exciting it is to find items like these. If they are valuable to someone I want to be able to save them and get them to someone that can use them rather than have them go in the dumpster. My questions to the Oldsmobile community are: 1.) What would be the value of this package be? They had a pretty hefty price. 2.) Is this of value or are these readily available? 3.) Does anyone out there want them? If anyone can answer any or all of these questions please PM me, e-mail me: billmawbey@hotmail.com or call: 715-347-2676. I would be happy to run back and get them if these would be of value to someone. I am leaving town tomorrow at 10:00 and might be back in time on Saturday to get over to the sale before they close for good. See pics attached. Thanks for your help.

The clay bar has been mentioned in this thread several times. I clay my 63 Riviera 1 or 2 times a year and it works wonders on the finish of my car and makes it so much easier to keep clean. I think most of us agree that the waxing, cleaning, polishing etc. that we do to our cars is not always as much fun as it used to be when we were 16 with our first car. One thing that has made the claying of my car easier and faster is the discovery of "Mothers Speed Clay 2.0". I'm sure some of you have already discovered it. It is a hand held applicator with a rubber polymer layer that replaces the clay bar in the claying process. The applicator fits nicely in the palm of your hand and is easy to grip even when wet. One great thing is that it can be cleaned by rinsing with tap water. If you drop it, no problem. You just rinse it off. Unlike the clay bar which if dropped may have to be thrown away because of embedded contaminants. It is good for 20-24 uses depending on the size of the car you are using it on. I still use the regular clay bar from time to time but, this is great for a quick surface tune up. It is readily available locally and online. Here is the company blurb about it and a short YouTube video.

Mothers Speed® Clay 2.0 is our fastest, most durable and versatile paint restoration and surface prep tool yet. This next generation contaminant removal process is so quick and easy, it’s as simple as washing or spray waxing your way to a perfectly clean, smooth and restored paint surface, ready for polishing and waxing. Clay as you wash, or clay as you wax, this patented, rubber polymer technology quickly shears off and removes both surface and embedded contaminants including paint overspray, water spots, fresh tree sap, rail dust, bird droppings, light oxidation and brake dust. Left alone, these particles can quickly cause molecular breakdown of your paint, leaving the finish dull and vulnerable to further deterioration. Speed Clay 2.0 will stop this damage and restore brilliance to your car’s paint, chrome, glass and smooth plastics.

It won't let me post more. I hit the size limit

Edit your photos before you try posting them. I right click on the photo, click on Edit, click resize and decrease the number of pixels. I normally decrease to 1500 (just a number I chose that seems to work for these purposes) on the top number and the bottom number auto adjusts. Save the photo. There is another adjustment there also that you could use to resize. I have found doing this will allow me to load 10 or more pictures at a time. Each of these pictures started out as over 7MB each. At this size I could only load 1 at a time. I resized them and now the first one is 1.66MB, the second is 874KB and the third is 1.75MB. At these sizes I could load all 3 and easily be under the maximum of 9.77MB for the post.

Spent the afternoon performing recommended tests.

Went on line and found reference to a past post from another person who attached a photo to his query  showing battery and cables.

One of the suggestions offered was to turn battery around so that positive cable was closer to radiator than to the outside edge of

the underside of the hood so as to avoid contact with the hood and prevent a possible electrical issue. I opened the hood and discovered

a grayish discoloration which lined up with the positive battery post. I repositioned the battery on its tray so as to avoid the battery post.

Head lights, dash lights, tail lights are now working. Front parking lights are not working, but directional signals are and I expect that is another

    and unrelated issue.

Thank you all so much for helping me to find the issue.......

When I first got my car all of the lights worked properly except the parking lights. I could not figure out why they didn't work as all components seemed to be in good working order. On advice from a forum member I unplugged the main electric feed at the firewall, cleaned the connectors and reseated it firmly. Problem solved. This may or may not solve your problem but, it is a good place to start.

    Ed,

My car came equipped with the remote mirror however the toggle was missing and the cables were stuffed down in the door. The prior owner must have lost the joystick or didn’t want to cut the freshly installed door panels and reinstall.   I’m simply trying to take the path of least resistance, but will keep the original mirror and search for a toggle down the road.

Thanks again everybody for the help!

    Robert

    Robert,

If someday you would like to go back to the remote mirror try contacting one of the vendors in the Riview. I'm sure you could get a nice remote mirror with good chrome and complete with the toggle and inner door plate  I think there is a cutout on the backside of the inner door panel so that you can thread the toggle through and mount the toggle in the proper location. Maybe someone can confirm or deny this.

I've never owned a first generation Riviera that did not come equipped with a remote mirror so I'm not sure about my next statement but it makes sense to me so I'm saying it anyway.

The remote mirror is stamped into the data plate which means that it was installed at the Fisher plant before going to final assembly.   In the Fisher body plant a reinforcement was attached to the inside of the door skin which would give the mirror extra support.  I imagine that the non mirror equipped cars did not have that reinforcement; the non remote mirror probably just screws to the door skin. So you're probably on the right track just using the CARS mirror and the attaching bracket attached to the door skin.  The basic Riviera did not come with any outside mirror.

    Ed

My car when I purchased it had the non-remote tri-shield mirrors on both sides of the car. Ed, you are correct the mirrors are just screwed into the door skin. I have not had any problems with them and they seem to be anchored solidly.

When I first purchased my car I had explored changing my driver's side mirror to a remote mirror. As I looked at cars that had the remote mirrors I noticed that they were mounted in a different location than my mirror. I do not know if my mirror had been located in the proper location as per Buick or not. It works fine where it is located. If I remember correctly, I did not get the remote mirror because it would not have worked properly being put in the same location as my mirror which leads me to believe that the different mirrors (the remote mirror as opposed to the tri-shield mirror) are located in different locations on the door to be viewed properly by the driver and avoid interference with the vent window. Whether this is true or not I don't know.

You can ship it FedEx. Just get a couple large pieces of cardboard and wrap it a couple times.  Make sure you insure it for crazy $$$. Just in case.

That's the beauty of using Keysone if you can drop it off at one of their stores. They take care of all the packaging and shipping to and from their plating plant at no extra cost.

    Hi Ken,

I used Keystone Automotive. They have their own replating plant in Minnesota I believe. All you have to do is take it in to one of their stores. They will give you an estimate and if you accept you leave it there. They take care of the shipping to and from the plant via one of their trucks which picks up items to be rechromed on a weekly basis and then drops the newly chromed items back at the store. You will get your original bumper back. I had the front upper bumper on my 63 rechromed by them. They did it for less than $400. Price is determined by the condition of the bumper. No one high price fits all pricing. It was about as painless as it could be and I was very happy with the results.

  14. I am looking to buy a set of turbine wheel covers for my 1963 Riviera. I am looking for a high end set that needs very little or no work. I have explored the usual venues and have had no luck locating a set so far. I do not want to leave any stone unturned and am reaching out to the forum members. If you have such a set that you would like to sell or know of someone that would be willing to sell such a set please PM me. Thanks.

Here's a picture from a Buick brochure that shows the positive cable next to the radiator and across the top, between the caps of a Group 27 battery.  There is a service bulletin that suggests that the positive cable be run between the battery itself and the hold down bolt on the back side. It did come from the factory that way. Both cables were black, the positive one, next to the radiator, has a large P cast into it.  Factory color on the air cleaner.  Not a gloss and not a ruby red.  The weave in the photo is from the paper the brochure is printed on.

Dunno if that's correct so much as advisable. ;) That is, it's not the way it came from the factory.

I'm pretty sure that Buick sent out a service bulletin to dealers to route the cables this way. I would assume that at some point they would have started doing it at the factory as well. I know I have seen other diagrams showing the cables routed in this manner.
