  2. Mr. Wudsy, The Ford Styling department, lead by E.T. Gregorie, was a refuge for urbane, cultured Edsel Ford from his tyrannical and increasing paranoid father and his henchmen as the 1930's wore on. Edsel had had custom-bodied specials built on Ford chassis periodically, another was in order for 1938-'39. This time, the Lincoln-Zephyr platform would be the basis. Edsel and E.T. had ongoing discussions of styling and the current trends here and aboard, European custom coachbuilders a real influence. Edsel visited the major European auto shows annually, no doubt returned with a trunk full of promotional materials. In discussions of what the latest special was to be, Edsel only specified it be 'continental' in theme and proportions. That left the design to the talented Gregorie to create. In oral recollections, he related that he took a vellum side elevation drawing of a '38 Lincoln-Zephyr sedan to trace over, in one half hour that inspired design developed: lowered, long hood, low belt-line, close-coupled passenger compartment utilizing the blind-quartered cabriolet top, short boxed trunk, deleted running boards, pontoon fenders, cleaned of extraneous trim. When Edsel saw the drawing, he was instantly smitten, told Gregorie not to change a line, take it to the Lincoln in-house custom body shop to see how soon it could be built. Production of the Lincoln K was staggering to a close, the shop had plenty of skilled metalworkers who were available to literally hammer out the body panels. Initially, the plan was to build only the one-off special, that was to be shipped to Hobe Sound, Florida by March 1939 for Edsel's vacation. Upon the car appearing to Edsel's wealthy contemporaries, the reception was enthusiastic, with multiple request for additional copies. Edsel was surprised by the interest it generated but also realized the potential it represented, ordered a second special built ostensibly for his sons but also as an engineering prototype. Throughout 1939. the idea developed these special Zephyr convertible would be a good addition to the line. Gregorie developed the styling based on what would become the new Lincoln-Zephyrs for 1940. As mentioned, Lincoln Twelve K was drawing to a close, Edsel saw the special convertibles were an opportunity to keep the skilled workmen building the bodies. There were no volume tools and dies for the first year, all bodies are hand-formed, welded and leaded. Think of it, in contrast to our era of computer-aided automotive design, one talented man drew on his knowledge and talent to develop a timeless design with only the impetus of the inspiration that it be 'continental' in theme. No endless design reviews, no focus group feedback sessions, no market research to determine viable volume interest, just the efforts of two men of taste and vision. Aren't you glad you ask..? 5. The first year 1940, what became Lincoln Continental for 1941, was advertised as Lincoln-Zephyr Special Continental Cabriolet. The inspiration, design and development of what became the Lincoln Continental by Edsel Ford and E.T. 'Bob' Gregorie is a fascinating episode in automotive history. Truly it was one of serendipitous events and the people who made it happen.

  9. The 1932-'33 Nash are Kenosha's most attractively styled 1930's products, is there a consensus who the designer(s) was/were? Count de Sahkoffsky was credited with the 1934, though those look a tad overwrought with too many speed lines.
  10. Its in the right price range, from what I can discern from the photos. A good deal has been spent on chrome plating which is an expensive item and the straight metal and paintwork look very good. Nothing like an in-person inspection to see all those areas where rust might have occurred and can be hiding. One would have to experience the car in person and drive it to determine if its functional condition matches it appearance. If you should do an in-person inspection, please tell us your impressions good and less so.
  11. Happens to me about half the time, if someone has the answer how to fix this, I'd like to know too!
  12. You are welcome. Ross Miller of the Speedwell Garage in Parkton, MD is the go-to guru on all thing Packard, especially postwar. He rebuilds Ultramatics, explained the correct operation and no-no's in discussions on the PackardInfo.com forums. We try to pass along this important information.
  13. Condensing the image and reducing the contrast seems to help show the details. I'd opine it was a European coach-built Packard by the descending belt-line and top with landau irons with a 1940-'41 radiator grille grafted onto the wider shell, maybe a 1935 Eight.
  14. I recall in the 1990's there were a lot of LCOC members that swallowed hard to accept the 1958-'60 models as 'legitimate' for membership in their club. Of the three model years, the 1958 are the most extravagant and purest expression of the original design intent by John Najjar. If extravagant can have greater or lesser degrees, the 1959-'60 perhaps a minor amount less so. Regarding the first generation Oldsmobile Toronado, the 1966 is the purest expression of John North's design intent, the 1967 only changed in grille and headlight valance panel detail, which detracted little from the 1966 original. The 1968-'69 'catcher's mask' frontal restyle is another matter, affectively negated the purity of the original. The 1970, while attractive, carries a redesign which could have been applied to the Delta Eighty-Eight, it just doesn't look special or unique.

Copy and paste in your email: daafd90ecb803b35af9a49dd7976b181@sale.craigslist.org I have no personal interest or stake in the eventual sale of this 1953 Packard Clipper Deluxe. Note: Although the interior has been reupholstered, it is not in the factory style or materials. It appears serviceable, window frames and dash were painted medium gray metallic from the factory, not black. How do I know? I have this same year and model Packard. There should also be fender skirts, which were standard for the Clipper Deluxe. Prospect owners should educate themselves on how Ultramatic functions. it has a Low and High range plus a lock-out torque convertor. Either range may be selected to drive in, the transmission will stay in that range with only the torque convertor locking out at approximately 20 mph dependent upon throttle position. The Low range is not intended for highway driving,. High range is generally the range for all driving situation, starts off leisurely, has a pronounce feel and sound from the engine when the torque convertor lockouts out, then in direct drive. It unlocks around 10 mph. An action the driver should NEVER do is try to shift between ranges when the car is in motion. The gear sets are NOT coordinated, such action will damage Ultramatic. Late in the 1954 model year Packard introduced Gear-Start Ultramatic which automatically starts in Low range, shifts to High, then the torque convertor lockout takes place as before. This was done to get more spritely performance to compete with the hot new V8's.
  16. Not unibody flex but the early '58 430 engines had teething problems. On raising the front of a '58 Lincoln with a bumper jack, it will deformer badly, never look right no matter how much its straightened. This '58 looks never to have been jacked up that way. The '58 front bumper is an assemblage of four pieces, none rugged enough to withstand the weight of the car.
  17. 1949 CROSLEY HOTSHOT roadster - $10,900 - Eagle Point, OR https://sacramento.craigslist.org/cto/d/white-city-rare-1949-crosley-hotshot/7154565666.html We decided to sell a delightful project, this 1949 Crosley Hotshot. We polished it up so it could go in the Patriots Cruise on the 4th of July. It got so much attention! It looks great, runs great, stops on a dime, has a new battery, gas tank, gas lines, filters, hoses, lines, and the tires still have the little stubs on them. It has disc brakes that are almost new. The transmission has been gone through. It has older paint but still looks decent and there are no obvious dents or dings. The engine has been completely gone through and it drives really nice! It has a tiny triangle tear in the drivers seat. There are less than 29 thousand miles on the odometer. I have three others and no time for this one. The Hotshot was the first sports car made in America. This car was made in 1949, their first year for the Hotshot, and they made them until 1952, when Crosley went out of business. Crosleys are tiny cars, and extremely popular. They are very rare, especially on the west coast. Mine have won many trophies, including Best of Show. If you are interested, it is located in Eagle Point, Oregon. Asking $10,900 or best offer. You will have to name it.Happy to deliver it. 19. Note the rear door hinge is still in place, this is a conversion of a taxi sedan. If it were factory-built, the wrecker body sides would be one piece panels. It resides in the Gilmore-CCCA Museum Checker collection, they have the historical background on how it came to be. Survival of the '30's Checker Model Y is near zero.
  20. The W-K Model 56 was the entry-level series, 178 ci six, 109" wb, really something of a Whippet with a Knight engine, though priced around $1000 whereas the Whippet 98A for $800. A preserved original 56 showed up here in western New York a few years ago.

  24. Typical, the response rate for Craigslist emails is terrible. Roca, Nebraska is tiny 220 people, someone has to know who owns this '50 Pontiac. Maybe the post office?
