Hoping to learn more about some vintage illustrations that I have just acquired from France. These are all signed R. Steffen and dated between 1922 and 1930. The drawings are exceptionally detailed and show designs for Rolls Royce, Avions Voisin, Lancia and Hispano Suiza cars. The Rolls Royce piece is noted "Salon de Geneve 1923" (Geneva Auto Salon). The pieces are quite large and as a result, I believe that they are design proposals rather than illustrations produced for a book or publication. Based on the style and quality of these pieces, I believe they were produced by a high end coach builder or carrosserrie. However, I purchased them as-is and do not have any additional information. Can anyone provide more information regarding the coachbuilder and / or artist who produced these? Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Finally received these in the mail from France - see the attached photos of the full renderings. Close ups of the artist's signatures are in my original post above. As noted originally, these are dated between 1922 and 1930 and the cars depicted are Rolls Royce, Avions Voisin, Hispano Suiza and Lancia. Any thoughts regarding the coachbuilder and / or artist who made these would be greatly appreciated!

An unusual and challenging request but this forum has amazed me before. The signatures attached are on pieces of what look to be original Carosserie / Coachbuilder drawings from France. The drawings are of designs based on Rolls Royce, Hispano Suiza, Avions Voisin and Lancia cars. The illustrations are dated between 1922 and 1930 Can European coachbuilder experts identify the name of the artist and / or coachbuilder based on this signature? I have not yet received the illustrations but will post them once received. Thanks in advance! Michael

Thanks for your thoughts - It certainly could have been produced as part of a publication. Based on the wear and style of the piece, it does seem to be very early however and likely around a similar age to the car pictured. In my experience, art for publications (including sales brochures) tends to be finished to a higher quality than this piece (though not always). My first thought as a result is that this was produced as a proposal to a prospective customer of the type of body that could be built for them, by either Mercedes or a coachbuilder. I don't think the Mercedes script would be used for something internal but would make sense for a customer proposal. I appreciate the suggestions and insights.

Hi Everyone, I purchased this vintage painting online as-is and am hoping to learn more about this piece. Based on the style of the painting, it looks to be original design studio art (It doesn't have the polished quality of advertising or publication art though I may be wrong). My guess is that the piece dates to around 1930 and was painted at either Mercedes or by a Coachbuilder who created custom bodies for Mercedes chassis. However, I am not certain. The back is blank with no additional markings. Have you seen a piece of art of this type? Is this by Mercedes themselves, a coachbuilder or something else? Can you identify the exact model / year of the car? Is this a 'concept car' styling proposal or an actual vehicle produced? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I just acquired this original advertising illustration and hoping to learn more about it! The item appears to be an original oil painting circa approximately 1920s of a Sunbeam 16hp Touring Car. The painting itself is approximately 5 1/2” by 10” and the rear is stamped “property of Sunbeam Motor Car Company and must be returned with the impressions of block" (it’s faded so wording may not be exact). I collect vintage car sales literature and believe this was most likely used in the production of a brochure / catalogue. It’s an extraordinarily detailed and beautiful painting. I was hoping that someone might be able to confirm the exact year of the car pictured. Also, if anyone has original Sunbeam sales brochures, would you be able to check whether this illustration is included? I would love to acquire a copy of the brochure that this was used for.
