  1. since you are new to old cars When did I say that? This is the sixth Edsel I have owned. In the last 30 years I have also owned a 1930 Ford Model A, 1937 Packard, 1949 Buick, 1950 Pontiac, 1950 Studebaker, 1951 Chevy, 1952 Ford, 1956 Buick, 1957 Chevy, 1958 Mercury, 1959 Cadillac, 1961 Rambler, 1961 Mercury convertible, and several more....
  2. I bought one of the solderless connectors and hooked it up and my reconditioned original AM Ford $50 radio works great. Thanks again....
  3. If you're the carb king then you're the man I need to talk to. The gas is a week old because I filled it up twice in the last two weeks. It's not a new engine. It has 108k on it and smokes pretty good so it's probably never been rebuilt. I don't have a timing light and have never used one before. I could probably buy one and find a video on YouTube on how to do it if that's what you would recommend. I appreciate the advice from you and the others so please tell me what my next move should be....
  4. I replaced the fuel filter which was very old and the gas inside looked pretty dirty. I turned the fuel/air mixture screw on the carb to the left to lean it out. I did it one full turn, drove the car, and it seemed a little better so I turned it a second full turn. It drove a little better so I turned it a third full turn and it drives pretty good but still backfires some in third gear. I checked the nuts and bolts on the intake manifold and base of the carb and they were all tight. So what's my next move? Should I lean it out one more full turn or would that be too much? Thanks to all who have responded....
  5. I'll replace the fuel filter tomorrow and see what happens. The fuel pump was replaced recently and the tank was cleaned too so hopefully it's the fuel filter. Thank you....
  6. The one barrel carb on the 6 cylinder engine on my Edsel keeps backfiring unless I pull out the manual choke a little. When I stop the car the engine idles very fast so then I have to push the choke in again until I start out again and have to pull it out so it doesn't backfire. Having to do this every time I stop is getting old so how can I fix this problem? Will turning the screws on the carb help? The previous owner said he had the carb rebuilt last year and has only put about 100 miles on it since then. Will spraying some carb cleaner in it help? Any other ideas? Thanks....
  7. Thanks for the info. Radio Shack has a solderless connector for $3.49 (see link below) so since they're closed tomorrow I'll get one on Monday. Thanks again.... https://www.radioshack.com/products/radioshack-solderless-motorola-type-plug?variant=5717455045
  8. Can I buy the male end and attach it to the antenna wire in the car now or is some special type of tool needed to do that?
  9. I don't know-is it? The other end has to have the male end that goes into the radio. Can someone tell me where I can find a piece 14' long with the proper pieces on each end? What company makes these types of antennas? If I could find that out I could contact them but there was no company name on either antenna....
  10. I replaced the radio in my Edsel today and saw that the antenna wire is pretty old and about ready to break in two up by the radio end. The car has twin antennas at the back (one is a dummy) so I need a piece about 14' long. The problem is the end that attaches to the antenna. I have added a couple of pics showing the female type receptacle with the screw-on piece that holds it in place. Can someone please tell me where I can find something like this? Thanks....
  11. I found one for $100 plus shipping and it's a little rough but it's better than nothing. Good luck.... http://www.felix2.com/?ss=Mississippi&yy=&tt=
  12. I found a guy through Ebay who fixes old AM car radios really cheaply and includes a lifetime guarantee too. I was looking for an original radio for my '60 Edsel because the one in it didn't work, had no push buttons, and the knobs didn't match. Bob had one with black buttons and knobs (I needed black) which he had already repaired and played for several hours and he only wanted $35 for it plus $8 shipping from his home in Ohio. I checked his feedback and, of the last 25 old car radios he sold, only two went for over $100 and a couple sold for $10 each. The average price for the 25 auctions was $37.56 which, as you guys know, is incredibly cheap. These are working radios which, as I said before, have a lifetime guarantee. Anyway, his name is Bob Rosengarten, his email address is rrosengarten1@woh.rr.com and his user ID on Ebay is Bellbrookbob. Tell him you were referred by Dave in Kentucky with the Edsel. Here's a link to one of his auctions.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/301798511285?item=301798511285&viewitem=&vxp=mtr
  13. I was 17 in the summer of 1969 and getting ready to start my senior year at an all boys Catholic high school (which I hated) in Mundelein, IL. My brother went there too and since it was 15 miles away from our home in Waukegan my dad decided to buy me a car so he wouldn't have to pay for two school bus fares. He wouldn't let me go with him when he went to buy it. He came home with a dark blue '65 Impala 2 door hardtop with a 6 and 3 on the tree which was ok with me because I had asked him to at least try to get a 2 door with a V8 and stick if possible so two out of three wasn't bad. Has anyone else ever gotten their first car without seeing it first?
  14. I didn't read all 4 pages of replies so someone may have already mentioned the '60 Edsel convertible of which only 76 were built....
  15. Any Ford radio would be fine as long as it will fit into the dash without any cutting. I'm thinking of changing the backup lights to tail lights so any red original or repro lenses would be fine. Please email me at 61rambler@bellsouth.net with the price including shipping to zip 40014. Thank you....
  16. Where are you located? How far are you from the car? It has "manual everything" including no power steering? That should be interesting. What does the guy want for it? Post some pics of it when you can and good luck....
  17. At least it's not totaled and the driver wasn't injured. How many horsepower does something like that have? My Model A has 40 hp and would definitely make a very poor race car....
  18. Thanks again. Also, I'm not interested in a trade anymore....
  19. Thanks. Is there a way I can do it or can only mods do it? I have this same ad in the other forum for all vehicles is why I ask....
  20. I dropped the price to $16,500 but I don't know how to do it in the title....
  21. It's still available and it still runs great but I'm not looking for a trade anymore....
