Indian 101
I have been offered a hydraulic shift transmission from a 1948 Desoto Coupe to replace my Hydraulic shift transmission in my 1950 Desoto Custom 4 door. I guess the 1948 transmission has external E-brakes (mine has internal two shoe E-brake)? Will the 1948 transmission fit my 1950 Desoto, are there other differences than the E-brake? I hope someone can help me with this question.
D Yaros
You might try asking your question in the DeSoto forum - http://forums.aaca.org/forum/48-desoto/
Spinneyhill
Hollander 1952 only gives one listing for '47-'51 DeSoto with Underdrive. They are the same but there were different cases used. Yours (1950) should be case 1137365. The '48 could be 1137365 after engine no. 116876, but a different one for engine nos. before that.
c49er
The 1948 deSoto uses an M-5 transmission..... completely different than your 1950 M-6 transmission. Externally/ dimensionally and electrically different. Two pics of the early M-5 and a pic of later styles of 1950 M-6 transmissions external and internal E-Brakes. Indian 101
Thank you, descriptive pictures :-). I realize your advice is to look for a newer transmission, maybe 1949-1952 will fit? 47/5000
Rusty_OToole
Do internal parts interchange?
c49er
Some of the internal gears interchange. The oil pump design is different between 1946-48 and 1949-53 transmissions. That is the reason for some internal parts interchange issues.
