Guest Katies33PD
Was looking for the source of the leak from the gearbox on this '33 PD. Found the top cover covered in gear oil. After removing the cover found no gasket and the cover appears to be cut in two. Is this cover supposed to be two pieces or one? I either need the front piece or a new one piece cover.Anyone have one they can spare? Steve
ply33
If I recall correctly, the cover is two pieces. It has been a while since I've had mine out so memory is getting a bit foggy. There is an opening at the top of the transmission where the shift lever arm extends down from the frame. Not sure what the material was for the original boot to cover that area, I used a small piece of radiator hose. Seems like that much gear lube would have a hard time getting to the top of the rear section of the cover even without gaskets and missing boot unless the transmission was over full. Guest Katies33PD
Thanks for the quick reply Which brings us to question 2 - How much gear lube? Read all the posts regarding what type of lube but have not seen a quantity. I assume fill till it runs out of the upper plug hole about 35oz
Scott Bonesteel
Let me check, I might have one. If I have one it would be a 34, I will check my parts books to see if it is the same. P.S. Post some pics of your convertible coupe, love to exchange info with 33-34 convertible owners. SMB
ply33
'33 and '34 transmissions use the same case part number if I recall correctly. I fill mine to where it just is level with the bottom of the fill plug hole. The instruction book calls for 2 3/4 pints in the free wheeling transmission which I think is 44 oz if the transmission is bone dry.

ply33
If I recall correctly, I made my top cover gasket from flat gasket stock purchased at the local auto supply. I don't see a listing for '33/'34 Plymouth, but Best Gasket shows a set for '33/'34 Dodge which might be the same: http://www.bestgasket.com/drive_train_part_info.asp?DriveTrainType=Transmission%20Set%20(standard) If someone has a Dodge parts book for the era we could verify the numbers. Edit: Just looked through my boxes of transmission stuff, only have one rear cover plate and no front one. Memo to self: Getting older, need to repack in to smaller lighter boxes and/or move to lower location if I'm going to be able to access those again. Scott Bonesteel
OK, did some digging in 'Group 21', the section of the parts books dealing with the transmission. Checked my 34 Dodge and Plymouth books, as well as the 33 Dodge and Plymouth 'Master Parts Lists'. All of them agree: 33-34 Dodge and Plymouth all used the same gaskets, the large one for the rear is #600356 and the smaller one to the front (which the books refer to as 'Gearshift Rail Cover Gasket, Front') is #601567. The ones on that 'Best Gasket' website look about right, nice resource. Confirmed my 34 has a two-piece cover, still looking to see if I can find a spare 34 box or cover. 1935EB
Here are a few photos that may be helpful. I love your Convertible coupe. Have you posted any other pictures of it? These show the top of transmission housing which goes under the frame cross member. The shifter mechanism of course goes into the top of the cross member. Water can splash up into transmission opening without the gasket. I would like to see a picture of one. Todd's idea of using a section of radiator hose sounds good. Hope this is helpful, Chris
1935EB
As a side note. There is also a frame under this cross member that holds a rubber bumper to support bottom of transmission. This assembly controls the vertical movement of transmission to a very small range. I will try to find my photo of the transmission rubber bumper. 1935EB
The long rectangular piece of rubber is vulcanized to a sheet metal piece that bolts onto the frame cross member as discussed. Hope this helps, Chris
Guest Katies33PD
Thanks Chris very helpful. Now who has a spare front cover?? Steve
1935EB
Contact Dave Dave@dodgecityvintage.com His handle is Countrytraveler on this forum. His company has a lot of early Dodge and Plymouth original and reproduction parts. This transmission was used on 33, 34, maybe 35 Plymouth and Dodge cars? They are good folks to do business with. Send him a photo of the cover and ask if he has one. Chris

ply33
Scott others,I went to best gasket website search and could not find the gasket/seal you are referring to. do you have a best gasket part number? Thanks, ChrisOdd. The link I posted above now seems to point to some Ford and Mercury transmission gasket sets. If you click on product search, then Chrysler products under transmission then transmission set. I think the 9034 is the one you want. They make it hard to save a direct link, but here is a PDF of the page.Best Gasket - Trans:Rear Axle:Other Part Information.pdf
Guest Katies33PD
Yup those are the ones I need but have not found a source that has them. Made one from sheet material for the rear half of the over but still need the front cover, Car show tomorrow with lots of parts dealers maybe I'll have some luck there. Got a shopping list ready to go searching.
