Peter Gariepy
How cool are these transporters? And the cars wonderful. What a photographic time warp. Looks to me these shots were from 48' to 56'. The F-1 Ford trucks are interesting. What I've been told in the past, the 1/2 tons shipped with hub caps and the 3/4 ton were a option! God bless the poor drivers...those COE trucks drove & rode so hard. No power nothing! They were Lucky to have a AM radio, heater, & some x-tra Running lights. And the GMC truck more than likely had a scream'm 6-71 detroit diesel to keep your foot hammered to the floor with. Some great cars on those transports. American Made! keiser31
That first car in Jim's post looks to have a tiller steering setup on it.
nzcarnerd
In that set with the '59 Fords transporter wreck, the last pic is printed back to front. Seems the rescuers and the gawker's vehicles are all non-Fords! This era is mostly from pre-freeway days. Anyone know enough of truck history to know what the speed limit was for trucks at that time. From the little I know of trucks of that era they mostly would have had only around 150 hp to play with so I presume anything much more than a 40mph cruising speed with a load on was a bonus.
