'55 T-Bird

I thought I might try this site for some info on fuel problem my husband is having. The gas seems to be running down and out of the carburator or fuel pump after the car is shut off, and it is very hard to start. If anyone has a '55T-bird and care to comment or make suggestions, please do. He has already tried a new fuel pump and it doen't seem to help. Thanks!

Hello Jean. Welcome! Sounds like a bad gasket in either the carb or fuel pump. You need to find out which one, before anyone can help you.

If gas runs out of the system, the engine loses it's prime and the fuel pump will have to refill the system again before it will restart. On a Ford, it should be an easy fix. Any reputable car repair shop will be able to fix your T-bird.

Go to top of page to community, find a local AACA Club near you and I'm sure those fellows will be glad to help you. Better yet, join the National AACA, then the Region and you'll learn all kinds of new things about your "Bird and antique cars in general.

Happy Driving!

These are classic symptoms of what is called "fuel percolation". If you're not able to identify a bad gasket (as Wayne suggests) or some other physical fault this is very likely your problem. Gasoline sold today boils at a much lower temperature than that of even 10 years ago.

I had this problem in my 1960 Buick and could only cure it with an electronic fuel pump and relocating the fuel line away from the motor.

The Thunderbird is a very popular car with a wide base of people who keep them running. I'm sure someone has encountered this on your motor and found an answer. If it doesn't appear here you can look for a solution specific to your car on the later-model Ford forum by posting there. Also you should use the search function here for "percolation" to see what others have posted.

Good luck! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Thanks so much for all the help! Still having to pour gas in the carb for it to start. He thinks the idle jets are leaking down.

thinking about rebuilding the carb or getting a new one. </div></div>

I rebuilt mine 3 times, and bought 2 other professionally rebuilt units. (This was in '96, when the lowered boiling point of gasoline wasn't as well known.) If one rebuild doesn't do it you've almost certainly got a heat problem.

Good luck! <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
