Shock oil?

Hey all,

What do you all use for oil in your lever shocks? I'm having mine rebuilt right now and would like to buy the oil before they get back...thanks!

The answer given was hydraulic jack oil which you can buy by the quart in auto parts stores.

Hope this helps. Let us know what you use and how it went. One guy suggested using an old ketchup bottle, the ones you can squirt and a mirror (like a dentist uses) to be sure and not overfill.

When I had my shocks rebuilt, I asked the rebuilder what kind of oil he used. He sent me a quart for when top off time occured. There are different weights just like engine oil. I thought and still to think its a good idea to use the same oil the rebuilder uses. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

bob's automobilia sells the stuff that is supose to be the stuff that was made for it. I got some to top off the 51 buick.

Hello - how did you remove your rear shock links from the frame? I have a '49 Roadmaster and they don't just mpop out. Is there a bolt or something up there? My manual has no instructions.

There's a nut on the top and on the bottom. After removing the nuts, I heated the places where the link went in with a propane torch for about a minute or so, then I tapped em with a hammer and they came right out.

I remember reading several years ago, in a technical article written by a lubrication specialist, that Morey's engine Oil Stabilizer was the same thing as the old Delco shock oil. Alas, I have not found Morey's in a local store, although they are still in business andit was available on the iNternet. I am sending my shocks to Apple or another rebuilder and hope they will tell me what to use.

I used http://www.classicautoshocks.com/ to rebuild my shocks. They are half the price of Apple and much easier to deal with. You aren't paying for the name..! It's a small, family owned company that had done nothing but rebuild shocks for 4o years. They are very friendly and will happily spend time on the phone with you.

Wether it's getting them to rebuild your shocks, or just information you want, give them a call. I think you will be happy. They treated me very well..
