I have a '56 Packard which has an ol' V-8 in it, and I'm thinkin' about pullin' in out and installin' a Ford 4-cylinder engine, I have hangin' around here somewhere. I figure it should have almost as much power and I lot less lifter noise? <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

What do you V-8 owners think about that Idea? <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Of course I'm assuming that there are Some V-8 owners still lurkin' around here somewhere? <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I finished off the last of the New-Years EggNog and Bourbon, so I guess it's back to business as Usual, around here. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Yes, by all means. Since the Diaspora of ?the best and brightest?, only we bumpkins are left around here so I guess that would be okay. Actually, Packard?s patented ?Tappet Tunes? lifters were an automotive first when introduced on the 55th Series, and were intended to provide a musical interlude when traveling out of range of radio stations.

I believe the usual vendors can supply the required Ford Pinto to Twin Ultramatic bell housing adapter, and by drilling a 3/32 inch hole in the body of the Ford lifters you may be able to retain the Tappet Tunes feature.

I knew someone would Agree with the Swap, and for All the right reasons, too. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

And I think I have a 3/32" drill bit, also. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I once chased down a 1947 Super Clipper in the streets of Havana Cuba (you'll see why) to see what the car had for an engine and I was shown a 4 cylinder Zatstava GTL in the place of the 356" engine so your swap is a great idea! Bellhousings are apparently still available froma Yugo dealer in Bukhara,Uzbekistan for a Zatstava/Packard/Zis (remember those old '41 Packard Lend -Lease dies?)tranny swap so maybe that's where "the brightest and best" went also? <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

You had best be careful about calling anyone names lest the moderating powers that be wipe your slate clean. As far as bumpkins go, I've been called a lot of names but never that. When I lived on the farm, the bumpkins were those guys who could get the tractor started on cold mornings and didn't fall behind the manure spreader because their boots didn't fit tight.

Now usually this sort of thinking is related to what we call

"small block Chevy syndrome" (the thinking that all cars, regarless of manufacturer need a SBC to "be cool")

quit drinking Busch or bud lite and start drinking Maker's Mark or Tanqueray or other suitable quality liquor and the sensation should vanish.

I think you'd have to bolt 2 Ford 2300 CC 4's end-to-end (like Chrysler did with neon engines for their Atlantic show car) to get enough ommph to make that Packard carcass move.

why not find one of those GM twin 6'es to put in there. Or does any one remember them they used the intake and exhaust manifolds and heads, piston & rods and distributers from the V6, but had a V12 block/ crank/ cam/ oil pan. Then you would have that lost V12 Packard. Stop at nothing but a gas station...

Well, 'I Must Say', My question Really got the Response that I was Hopeing for. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

But Now that I've got all the Eggnog out of my system, <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> I've desided to Keep that purdy little V-8. I fact I would really miss it if it was gone. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I guess the Ford 4-banger will go back to bein' a paper-weight. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

You really should scrap the engine so that the remaining examples will be more sought after and admired.

Basically no one wants V-8 engine blocks. I just gave a 374 to Mr. Pushbutton just in case he may need it in the future. If he is reading this post, come and pick it up. My first V-8 Packard did suck two valves at the same time after buying the car in New Jersey while I was driving it home to Michigan. That was the only time I ever had any trouble with any V-8. I still have the piston with the head of the valve pressed sideways into the top of the piston.

Wasn't this Smokey Yunick's complaint - that Packard V8s would suck valves in because of the poor quality of the valve seats.

Did the head of the valve break off from the stem or what??? Were the stems siezed in the guides???

One valve had the head break off and wedge sideways into the top of the piston. The other valve just bounced off the top of another piston.

That's suprising since I saw recently in the Cormorant bulletin that there are more 55's surviving in PAC (around 500) than any other year. Seems like they would be desirable.

Thats the point, they are everywhere. No big demand. Also my last 6 V-8 Packards with the V-8 never needed anything but oil changes. No need to keep a spare engine taking up space.

As I have been advised, you should have nabbed the power plant <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />. You could have made a fortune off e-bay from novices like myself <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
