Interesting old photos

In cleaning out my mother's house, we found an amazing collection of stuff that she collected in her 86 years of life. My brother hired a temporary worker to scan approximately 22,000 family photos. I have been reviewing photos that I remember from my youth and also been trying to figure out where my mother had some of these hidden, as I have never seen some of them before. My mother was born in 1920, and it appears that these photos must have come from my maternal grandparent's as the album that they were in was labeled 1914. I can't say if the date is right for these photos or not, but I think they were probably taken in Illinois, where my mother was born. I know nothing else about them, but thought they might be enjoyed by some other forum users and maybe stimulate some discussion. So here are a couple that I had never seen before.

Dear MC:

I printed the first photo out on good photo paper at about 7 inches square. With close examination of all the vehicles, I don't see any from later than 1915 that I can identify by year. There is one interesting detail, in that all the race cars are right hand drive. Buick switched in 1914 and Buick did a lot of racing. At least one car is probably a Buick and current models were almost always raced then. Also, I see two horse-drawn carriages in the background.

It appears to be a large track, maybe as much as a mile. Was your mother from around Duquoin? There was a mile horse track there. (The Hambletonian trotter race.)

Based on the above, the photo would appear to be around 1912-1913.

The photos were both scanned in the same scan (they scanned each page of the photo album). I copied them and cropped them into separate images. I can make the cars out a little better when viewing them in "my pictures" on my PC, but can't seem to figure out how to get them online in a larger format. I am going to try to get my brother to get me an individual first generation scan of each photo individually. I will try to get those files and will be willing to email them to anybody who is interested. If anybody want's an emailed copy of what I have now, I can provide that as well. I'm going to try attaching one of the photos to see if this will help...

My mother spent most of her life in Moline, but my limited memory (plus the Beardstown flood photos that I have been looking at) tell me that she grew up in Beardstown, so I guess the family was there before her birth as well.

So, my guess is somewhere near Beardstown.

I know very little about Illinois geography, I guess I need to do some research.

Matthew, that is a great photo. Notice that there were 5 car in the race and they were simply numbered 1 through 5. I love to look at the old race photos especially the Buicks. Thanks for sharing these. 22,000 photos!!! really?!!

22,000 is the estimate of the total number of photos. Only a small number of them are really specifically car related. Probably have other photos that include cars that I will eventually be able to share, but figured I would start with the earliest and most unusual ones. My mother never threw out anything. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> We also have her Diary for a time span of 50 years and my Grandmother's from 1909 to 1913. I never knew my grandmother, since she died before I was born, but I have been doing some interesting reading.

Dave, I agree with you on the right hand drive for car number 3 and number 4. Car number 5 and the un-numbered one next to it, I am not sure about. I can't quite make out whether they are right hand drive or left hand drive. But, when I look closely at an enlarged version of the original photo, I am pretty sure that car number 2 is left hand drive. So, if I understand your statement of Buick switching to left hand drive in 1914, along with the radiator shape looking right for a Buick to me, would that make the photo date as 1914 correct and car number 2 possibly a new 1914 Buick?

Dear MC:

Beardstown is about 150 miles south of Moline, not too far from Springfield, IL. Ther was a big track there, too. State Fair and all that sort of thing. Du Quoin is about another 125 SE of Beardstown.

I see on another thread that you're making your first trip to Hershey. What are you bringing so I can look you up on Saturday? Also, I'm at the Buick tent Thursday around noon. If you're a Hershey "newbie", just be warned to bring something to keep your jaw from dropping too far !!

Your understanding of my comment about Buick switching to LHD for 1914 is correct.

Dear MC:

The photo you posted that has a license plate number of 14794 is almost certainly a Buick, probably a 1911-1912, and one of the bigger models in the 30 series group. If Clay Green brings his original 1912(?) Model 31, you will want to see it. What you might want to do is bring several of the photos and do some "compare" work. I think the other photo, license plate 406 something , is an Overland, probably 1915 as it's LHD. A nice family group with their new car!! Can you ID any of the people? Family members?

All of these photos are on a set of 4 DVD's that all of my brothers and sister just got. In the near future, we will be dividing up the actual albums by lottery, I hope my number comes up on the early ones. If not, I might be able to do some horse trading for the early ones. I do recognize some of the people in some of the photos, but I have not yet had the time to sit down and compare all of the photos to identify exactly which family members are in each photo, but yes they are all apparently family members. I am going to try to find the time to print some photos and take them with me to Hershey.

Dear MC:

It was great to meet you at Hershey. Before you and the family got back, I looked at the little green Ford. That's a really great Model A touring! You should be very proud of it.
