I was just reading the 1956 Buick article in the Bugle when I noticed an error on page 25. It mentions an interior feature on all 1956 Buicks having a red ribbon speedometer. It also mentioned that in 1954 & 1955 the red ribbon was only offered on the Roadmasters. I owned a 1955 Special which had this feature, and my parents bought a new 1955 Century that had this "red" ribboned speedometer.

sintid, the speedometers that were on my Special & parents Century also were round, but had the red ribbon instead of the standard needle. The Special offered either the red ribbon or the needle. I think the Century came standard with the red ribbon.........it was very cool!

Interesting. I just chalked up the comment to a minor mistake having never seen a ribbon style speedo on a '55 Century/Special (and, infact, thought all of them were horizontal like my '54 Super). My '55 Century had a traditional round speedo with a needle pointer and is all I have ever seen. Wonder how many different units Buick used???

I was always under the impression that all Centurys had the red ribbon....My Special had the light group, ie: glove box, trunk, backup lights. All these on a model48 (2dr post)Maybe the up-graded speedo came with these options.

This would really confuse a judge. <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I was under the impression that the 55 Century was the first car with the "Redliner" speedometer as standard equipment. Maybe it was optional on the 55 Century's and people replaced them on the Specials in 54 and 55. Brian

The red liner speedo was first available on the Century in 55 as a standard option. All Centuries in 55 must have a red liner speedo. This was available on the Special in 55 as an option, Code Letter W, Red Liner Instrument Group.

Keep in mind that this discussion is pertaining to the round speedo. The horizontal speedo that was found on the Super and Roadmaster was a red liner in 54 as well as 55 and was standard. Therefore in 55 only the Special would have a needle speedo. All others were red liner.

Hope this helps.
