lvbosch
How can I tell the difference between a Special and a Century. I have a 1954 Buick Convertible. My Mother-in-Law says it's a Century and the restoration guy says it's a Special. Is there a code on the VIN that will tell you?
Guest my3buicks
Both are nice, but you can hope it's a Century. Model number would be 66C - A 4 barrel carb would also be on a Century.
Guest
The special is the short body, the Century is the short body. The Century has the roadmaster engine, and dash board. The special has the special engine, and dash board.Century came with wire wheels. The Old Guy
The wire wheels were an option on both the Special and the Century.Special Convert: 54-4467XCentury Convert: 54-4667XKeith is right about the carb. the Special has a 2 BBl and the Century has a 4BBl
Guest my3buicks
Centruy did NOT come with wire wheels standard, although they were an option for 54 on all but the Special series(according to BCA judging guidelines). Other than the larger engine and name badges the Century and Special are hard to tell apart in 54. Although, a step on the gas would quickly tell them apart. JalopyBob
The Special, Century, and Skylark shared the same dash. The Super and the Roadmaster shareda dash with a horizontal speedometer. The Special, Century, and Skylark dash had a round speedometer.
brad54
I'm not sure, but isn't the rear wheel opening a dead give away? If I'm correct, on the Century, the wheel opening is fully round and exposes the entire tire, while the Special has short "half wheel" opening, hiding the top half of the tire, much like a '55 Chevrolet. I know the Special does, because I've got one in the garage. Not positive about the Century, but pretty sure.-Brad
lvbosch
I think it has a 4-barrel carb, but I'll have to go and check. It has an open rear wheel area. And it has the word BUICK spelled out on the front of the hood.
palbuick
The easiest way is to get into the car behind the steering wheel, look between the gage cluster and the speedo, on the panel and you will see the word SPECIAL OR CENTURY. Not too hard.Jim Schilf palbuick

You have heard of the cow that jumped over the moon, I can assure you it was a deer.
