Is This An Electra 225?

You may remember about a year ago some Cubans converted a 59 Buick to a boat and sailed to Florida. The coastguard intercepted them, sent the Cubans back to Cuba and sank the Buick in the Atlantic. I was just looking around at pictures of 59's online and came across this.

The rear quarter looks as long as a 225, but my eyes may be deceiving me. It's a flat top too! frown.gif

The picture was real. I saw it on the news back then but never bothered to find it online. I just happened to stumble across the picture and posted it here.

There was a post about 2 months ago on the AACA forum that showed several examples of these car-based makeshift boats that have been coming out of Cuba of late. In addition to this example there was one made from a 1946 Mercury airport limo that looked just as good as this car.

All of the photos were documented authentic. It's a sad situation on many levels. frown.gif

From the news reports that I have in my files on this car, it was a LeSabre 4439, and was painted lime green, although this particular photo does not reflect that color too well. I have some other shots of it that do show it to be a putrid green, but not much detail. There is an effort underway among the cuban community in Miami to raise funds to locate and raise the car for a Cuban-Refugee Museum, as well as the other vehicle-boats that have been sunk. I think it would look good in my garage (or pool, if I had one)!
