National Drive Your Classic To Work Day?

OK, without dealing with the appropriate definition of "classic" is there any interest in trying to develop a day when everyone drives their collector cars to work? I'm constantly lamenting the fact that most old cars are squirrelled away from the public's eyes, and the hobby is suffering for it.

A friend of mine here at work has a motorcycle and just participated in "Ride Your Bike To Work Day" which is where I got the idea. Just one guy came up with it a few years ago, and it has really taken off. I don't know if anyone noticed a lot of bikes on the road a week or two ago, but that was when it happened. I saw a lot more bikes than usual, and discovered several people here at work who ride that I didn't know about. Pretty cool idea.

This might be a great way to increase the exposure of the hobby and have some fun with our cars. It won't cost anybody anything and everyone you pass will see your collector iron--kind of like a rolling car show. It might encourage more young people to join our hobby.

Thoughts?

I'm all for it. Of course, my office is 300 feet from my house, and I actually house my cars in the same building as my office. Most people have a somewhat different arrangement.<img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> Maybe I could drive them to the post office, or to lunch that day.

Actually, I do try to drive my cars. It?s fun and you?ll make some new friends. Total strangers will approach you and start a conversation, just because of your car. Be prepared for them to say, ?Yep, my Granddaddy had one just like that, ?cept it was a Ford.? But that?s part of the fun. In fact, you and your car are the best public relations agents the hobby has. Sharing it, along with being friendly, courteous and informative will go a long way to insure that our hobby continues to grow.

Sounds like a great idea! Motorcyclists' have their "ride to work" day, why not collector cars? I usually drive mine to work once or twice a year, when it already needs a wash (the back lot where I work is dusty gravel), tho as we speak, she's still awaiting new brake linings.

Great idea. Sounds like a project to bring together all antique car clubs too. I drive my 1934 Rolls Royce to the office several times a month if weather is OK. Also to church on Sundays. Cars were meant to be driven and most of the surviving examples exist because they were driven and maintained on a regular basis. Maybe those of us who belong to more than once club should start same sort of thread on other club sites.

I'd even go so far as to suggest that spring 2004 would be a good time. Perhaps in mid-May? Most of US has seen last of ice, salt, and cold by then.
