1914 Rhodia

[Great War Truck]

This vehicle is said to be a US made Rhodia from 1914 which was converted into an ambulance during WW1. I had not heard of Rhodia before i came across this one. Does anybody know anything about them?

I see the name Rhodes for a make on a list of makes I have, but not Rhodia.

"The vehicle, which dates back to 1914, has been restored by Greenodd resident Ken Atkinson in his home workshop in South Cumbria.

As well as being used as a wartime ambulance, this small truck was later used as a taxi, but is now thought to be the only one of its kind left in existence. Originally built using parts from American car manufacturer Empire, it has a 3 speed gearbox and no front brakes.

Mr Atkinson has spent several years working on the Rhodia. He has built the entire bodywork, and rebuilt the wheels, engine and many other items."

I think surviving Empire cars must be quite rare. This one - a 1913 car from memory - was imported to NZ from Australia in recent years. My photos from 2016.

I like it!  The radiators seem to match shape between the Rhodia and the Empire cars. Given the relatively short wheelbase, it would have not been a smooth ride for the war-wounded.
