FLINT HOTEL & DIRECTIONS - ADVISE

Buick Friends,

I've heard from a mumber of members asking about hotels in the Flint area. Below is a cut-n-paste of what I sent them. I thought the whole Group might be able to use this.

Like any manufacturing based city, there are parts of Flint you would not want to stay in or near. Here's what I forwarded:

There are some Flint areas/hotels to avoid. Anything on the North end of town is bad news. Anything on Pierson Rd or Dort Hwy, stay away from.

I would try the following: There are 3 hotels clumped together in what is called the Gateway Center just off of US23 at the Hill Rd Exit. The # for the Holiday Inn there is: 810-232-5300 This is about 6 miles from the meet but this is an excellent area/access. They can also give you the names and phones of the other hotels right next door. (I'm looking in the yellow pages right now as I type)

Courtyard by Marriott @ Gateway Cntr is 810-232-3500 is one of the ones next door.

There is also a Residence Inn @ Gateway Cntr but I don't have the #.

Winngate Inn 810-694-9900 near/good but not in Gateway Cntr.. AmeriHost 810-694-0000 near/good but not in Gateway Cntr.. Both of these are a couple miles to the east of the Gateway Center in Grand Blanc which is a good area and still about 6 miles to the meet.

Between those 5 let me know what you find.

Miller Road (and just off Miller Rd on some access roads) has a number of hotels also but is very busy and congested, is closer in to Flint (3 miles to Meet) but not as nice. Miller Road is the 'Main Drag' going east/west so to speak, 5 lanes wide with fast food places etc.. This area is ok but not as nice as those listed above.

Remember this is Flint were talking about not Lake Tahoe.

The actual Meet area is wonderful, shaded, lots of 100 year old trees, big lawns in an old large central park type setting. With the old Central High School on one end and the Sloan Museum on the other end, old City Library, Whiting Auditorium etc.. lots of shade and grass.

I do worry about some of the people who are staying downtown and rooming 'blind'. Yikes. I understand your asking.

Also if you are coming from the south/east as most out-of-staters will be, come up US23 out of Toledo, this is good expressway and you miss all of Detroit/traffic. There is some construction on US23 just after you cross the Michigan state line but it's still faster than going thru Detroit on I-75. Once in Flint take I-69 east to downtown and then take I-475 north a short distance to the R. T. Longway exit then Longway east 2 blocks.

Folks coming from the west can take I-69 up thru Lansing to Flint and not bother with coming over to catch US23.

Folks wanting to stay off the expressway can take M-52 or M-13 north to M-21 east. M-21 goes right to the meet joining up near downtown with Miller Rd. mentioned above and then Court St. M-21 is called Corunna Rd. near town and then becomes Court St. Once you pass over I-475 go 5 blocks and turn north (left) on Crapo 2 blocks.

The Meet is on the east side of downtown Flint just east of I-475. The main north/south street in downtown is Saginaw St..

Hope this helps.

In any city of any kind, there will be places that might not be the most desireable to be in--period. I highly suspect that if things get really bad, there will be additional security provided by the lodging locations for the protection of their guests as it's in their best interest. When doing my research, the location on Pierson Rd that you probably are at is now a convention center location (which it wasn't when we were up there for the last Flint BCA meet). I rather doubt they'd invest that kind of money in the property if it was in a bad place or had a high crime rate--just my suspicion.

In that earlier time, it was on the shuttle bus route so we didn't drive up there at all, but I did walk it one afternoon from the end of the city bus route back then. More toward the downtown area on that side of town, I did see some places that I would not feel comfortable in, but we all have our own comfort levels with that sort of thing.

I booked into the Super 8 on Miller Road many months ago and felt good to get it then. At this point in time, any hotel room inside the city limits could be a good thing to have. I'll have to wait until I get up there to make a final determination, but I feel that as long as you stay at a name brand chain facility, you'll probably be ok.

Just some thoughts,

Well, I booked at the Howard Johnson Express Inn. The brochure looks very nice and the price is great. I never been to Flint either. I'm sure we will all have a GREAT TIME......

Pierson Rd. is not "bad" it's just not great. Pierson Rd. is kind of the boardering road to the North end of town. The North end of town is pretty tough. I'm sure you will be fine. Just be security minded. You are right by the exressway exit. If you take Pierson Rd east toward downtown it gets pretty tough in about a 1/2 mile and if you head north from Pierson Rd. it gets tough too.

The meet location is about 3 miles east and 2 miles south of your hotel's location (i.e. you are on the NE side of town). If you take Pierson Rd east and then Saginaw or M.L. King Blvd south to the meet you will go through some pretty tough areas.

I-75/23 expressway (they are one in the same thru Flint) south to I-69 east to I-475 north to Robert T. Longway exit would be a better bet for travel route.

There is good news in that Walli's across the street from your hotel has really good food. Kind of a Flint Landmark. Their buffet is hard to beat and the Club meets their often. Eating places right downtown by the meet are pretty sparse.

It's in a cluster of motels just off Miller west of downtown, as I recall. You can go into Yahoo Maps or Mapquest or similar and put that address into the search window and it'll pull up a map for you. Driving instructions can be had to that address also.

Enjoy!

I am staying at the Holiday Inn Express. It is suppose to be right at the site of the meet. Is that a bad area? I made my reservations in November of 2001.

Whew! Now i'm a bit concerned about my Ramada Reservations. I called the Buicktown chapter and they advised that Cars may be parked and left at the Sloan Museum site for the entire meet. There will be security present at all times for the show. There will be shuttle buses to all the hotels. Hopefully this will go smoothly.
