1953 Desoto issues

Hey everyone, also posted this at Desoto.org.

Having some issues with my pals 53 Firedome with 276 hemi. Got it running pretty good, but driving notsomuch. It really feels sluggish at low speed, almost like a manual car starting off in second gear. It will shift after getting up to proper speed but it tough getting it there. Reverse goes great!  Things we have done so far-

Cleaned and rebuilt carburetor with mikes kit.

Accelerator pump, float, and metering rods adjusted according to service manual.

Idles great, revs great in neutral, bogs and sputters while driving, backfires through carb, power is low. Mixture screws do not effect running even at lower rpm.

Tested for vacuum leaks with smoke machine, found small leak at carb plate, repaired, not much change.

Timing is 5 btdc at 550 rpm, 15 btdc at 2k rpm. Plugs and wires replaced

Pertronix ignition, 12v conversion, exhaust heat valve for choke removed.

Mixture screws having no effect concerns me but I can’t seem to find any vacuum leak to cause it unless there’s another reason I’m missing. SOS!

New cap and rotor, coil is whatever the one the pertronix called for.

I know I checked the vacuum advance before with the suck on the vacuum line test, but failed diaphragm does sound like it would be causing the tuning and vacuum leak issue. Going to double check when it's not freezing my nips off, will let you know

15 degrees at 2000 sounds low. I would expect around 20 so maybe an advance issue- either the flyweights or vacuum.

Chilton shows 15 degrees centrifugal at 1900 AND 10-12 of vacuum. total 25-27.   ( This is crankshaft degrees)

Well the vacuum advance canister is indeed kaput, that certainly explains a lot ha!

So now the question is where to find a replacement. I've looked online and pretty much all the ones I've found are for distributor model xxx-2023, we have an IAZ-4002A.

Also cant seem to find any info on interchanging with others.

I take that back, I did find one at 200 bucks oof.

Ok, update….

Your IAZ-4002A distributor is correct for 1953-54 DeSoto.  The Auto-Lite vacuum chamber for it is part number IAZ-2023RA. Hope this helps!

I have a few non-Auto-Lite catalogs I can check if you need.  They often use VC-XX type ID numbers.

Tried to send OldBuick2 a message but got a message saying I haven’t posted enough to send messages or some deal

I think it’s 12 posts or something like that to get Message privileges.  Roberts Motor Parts and Andy Bernbaum are dealers too in MoPar parts.  There are several similar names in the form so be sure it’s Old buicks 2 that gets your message.

Good luck!
