How is the gear ring attached to the flywheel?

 

Mine has several broken teeth. Want to be sure I can replace it below I take it apart.

The ring gear is heated then placed on the flywheel.  When it cools it is tight.

is it heated to remove the original?

 

Can the removal and installation be done with flywheel attached to motor?

 

Can it be done DYI with blow torch?

It would be best to remove the flywheel from the motor, you might like to have a look at how it's done.

I finally got around to replacing ring gear, After removing the bell housing, it appears that my flywheel has the teeth machined on flywheel. Can anyone verify?

From your picture it would appear that the ring gear is part of the flywheel. This was common on older vehicles. You will have to remove the flywheel and take it to a machine shop for them to turn off the old teeth and fit your new gear for you.

 Before you remove the flywheel from the crank, make sure to mark both parts, so that you assemble the flywheel back onto the crank in exactly the same position. This will ensure you don't upset the motors balance.
