TerryH
Hey Guys here is my question. Can I index the pinion and pinion nut count the exposed threads. Remove the nut replace the seal and put the nut back in the same place and be ok for preload? It's on a 63 lesabre diff.
EmTee
Probably, but the prescribed procedure is not that hard and only requires an in-lb torque wrench. Refer to the shop manual for the preload torque reading for your car. A more precise alternative to your approach would be to measure the torque necessary to turn the pinion shaft (with no brake drag) before loosening the pinion bolt. Replace the seal and tighten the bolt until the pinion drag matches the original torque reading determined by the torque wrench.
drhach
Applying the loosening torque when tightening will not yield the same results.
Marty Roth
Isn't there a "Crush" washer in the mix?
