nifty 6
Hello. Helping a friend install a 2 barrel carb. The car was a family donation. Some parts were removed. Started installing the carb but came to a problem. One of the fuel lines doesn't screw into the fuel pump. Its the line that goes to the back of the carb. The fitting to the back of the carb fits fine. Are we missing a coupling? I have enclosed a picture. Its the line with the blue tape. Also what is the torque spec for the bolts holding the carb. Thanks Ron
GARY F
You are going to have to adjust that line so it go''s straight into the fuel pump. By looking at the picture the threads on the pump look bad unless it is just the picture.
D Yaros
Assuming the threads in the pump are good the line should work, once properly aligned. Alternatively, one could install a M/FM adapter fitting in the pump to serve as an extension?
nifty 6
The thread is OK as I tried another fitting. The line is just resting and the other end is not attached to the rear of the carb so I can better align the fitting. It just seems the fitting is slightly too big. The pipe just touches the opening preventing the fitting to screw in. As suggested maybe a M/FM is the answer? Trying to find a picture on the internet of the pump on the car to see if there is another adapter fitting. We have no other lines so assuming we have the right one. Thanks for the help. Ron If the pipe is in actuality preventing the fitting to thread, that would tell me the line is too big in diameter, -OR- more likely, has the flare been banged up/munged to prevent it from seating? You should be able to slide the fitting back on the fuel line and fully seat the flared end into the fuel pump orifice. Once that is done slilde the fitting back in place and start the threads. You state the carb end is not attached. Is it able to be threaded without difficulty? Do both the tube and fitting on the carb end look to be the same size as those on the pump end? Is it possible, solely for testing purposes, to remove the line completely and screw the carb end into the fuel pump?
The 55er
A brass fitting adapter is required. I have two Oldsmobiles with the exact same pump and attachment. The fuel pump casting is fine thread, the steel carb line is coarse thread and is a larger size. Should be obtainable at a good auto parts store like NAPA. The torque spec for the carb to intake manifold nuts is 11-14 ft./lbs.

Thanks for the pic and everybody's help. Ron
