SC38dls
Does anyone know the rear main torque specs on a 38 6 cyl ? can not find any specs except size in the shop or parts manual. Could I have an incomplete or abbreviated manual ?
Spinneyhill
I think you can't find them because they were not stated in the manual. I can't spot them in my manual. Perhaps back then you would "know" that based on bolt size. MoToR's Auto Repair Manual 1950 says the con. rod bolt tensions should be 50-55 lb.ft and the main brg bolt tension 90-95 lb.ft. Commander and President specs. were the same.
SC38dls
Thank you. I appreciate knowing my books are ok and finding out the specs. Your help will make it possible to get the beast back on the road by this weekend.
Gary_Ash
Torque wrenches were not commercially available before 1938 and it took many years for the manuals to include torque specs. Most of the Studebaker engine bolts were probably between Grade 5 and Grade 8. It is probably OK to follow recommendations for current Grade 5 bolts, but remember that old bolts may already have been stretched a few times in the last 75 years or so. Here's a typical table: https://www.boltdepot.com/fastener-information/bolts/US-Recommended-Torque.aspx
