1933 Graham Clutch Plate

Graham Man

Recommended Posts

Looking for a replacement clutch for my 1933 Graham 64.  It is a Borg Warner transmission 10 spline, 9 3/4" OD clutch.  I must be looking in the wrong place, this should be easy to find?  Hoping someone might have an interchange number?

Thank you

Chilton's interchange manual 1927-33 lists only two cars with that clutch plate, both Grahams in 1933. The facing is 9.25" OD x 5.5" ID. The pressure plate is only common to four vehicles, all 1932 and 1933 Grahams. Clearly Chilton got the OD wrong.

On the contrary, The Hollander 18th Ed. 1952 says it is a Long clutch model 9AB. It interchanges with

Graham '32-35 Std. 6 & 8, 6-65, 57A, 58, 64, Cust. 8, 68, Spec. 8-67, 72, 73, 75;

Graham '34-35 Super 69;

Hupp '34-35 I426, 527, 216, 427T;

Stude '32-35 6-56, Pres. 8-82, 1C, Com. 8-62, 73

Stude '34-35 6, Com B

Stude '36-37 Pres.

Stude Tr. '32-35 S2, 4, 10, 21, 31.

It is the same as the above except for the pressure plate in the Auburn '34-37 6-52, 53, 54.

Also fits is that from Ford '28-34 All, although the '34 truck and cab has pressure plate with larger inside diameter.

I wonder how much of this is correct... Good luck finding something. You may be able to clean up that one and get it refaced? What about the pressure plate?

Thank you for the information.  It is getting sad that ebay is some of the best information... Looked up 1933 clutch and found the Ford is extremely close.  The early 28-34 is a 8 inch disk and looks like it will work but the 60HP Ford is a 10 inch disk.  I have a friend digging up a used Ford 10 inch plate so I can check the center clearance, if it clears I will order a new Ford plate.  I would rather have to trim down the 10 inch to 9 3/4 inch than use the smaller plate...leverage is everything.

My pressure plate looks good but the surface rust will have to be cleaned up.  Planning on taking it apart and removing the rust then put it back together.  Guess I should look at the Ford plate and see if it uses the same springs.

Interesting I have a friend with several Graham cars, for over 50 years and he has never had to replace a clutch... guess they don't build them like they used to...

That Ford comment reminded me of an odd booklet (PB, 8x10, 100 pgs)  I'd forgotten--"The Penzing Automotive Book Of Knowledge, Eighth Ed, Walter O Penzing, Penzing Pub's NY--Containing Substitutions on Pass & Truck Parts", which seems primarily what Ford parts, especially A/AA parts, fit other cars, but has some other interchange info as well...no pub date, but latest model listed is 1941

Under makes/clutch lists only G-P, not Graham, and has no "64" listing...(lists B-W Damper Plate, Rigid Plate, and Cover Ass'bly, terms I'm not familiar with)...

Under Clutch Plate Numerical List And Interchange says Graham-Paige 33-35 that takes CD426 can take 11 other numbers...

Then has two lists of what vehicles can take a couple of Ford Truck plates...

Under Clutch Cover Ass'bls says "..complete clutch cover ass'blys used in Ford A #BL1523, AA #BL1524 (adjustment change necessary) may be used in: .list includes Graham-Paige 31-33 "64" . That's followed by "...above cars  (whole list) use BL2122, 2123, 2483, 2495, 3343. Clutch adjustments mat be changed on cover assemblies with a clutch fixture which parts jobbers usually have, or other methods may be used"...I assume those are all B-W numbers...

Under Clutch Release Bearings (Bearing Jobbers-Nice)  it says "#N833 used in Ford A, B, 46, 4Cyl, V8, 18, V8-40, 8 Cyl, can use B7580...B7580, also in (list includes Graham 1933 "64") can use 79144---

Looks like I have 4 choices all Ford 1928-1957, all 1 inch 10 spline.

    28-33 is 8 inch disk

    34-49 is 9 inch disk

    34-49 60HP 10 inch disk (I could grind this one to fit)

but I think the winner is Ford 1949-57 with 9 1/2 inch disk 1 inch 10 spline output shaft, should slide right in...

And yes same clutch release bearing should be the same...

Wow one of the first parts I will not have to build from scratch...
