GaryP65
What is the 'normal' position of this piece? I would think it's straight. I'm trying to pick it but not sure if it's jammed. GaryP65
Hey I got questions. After I get the unit out, can I A- put the shifter unit back in place without the lock? and B - is the tranny now unlocked so I can shift normally?And.... Happy New Year!
MikeC5
I'm 99% sure you can bolt the shifter assy back on minus the lock and you can shift normally.
GaryP65
Thought so but had to ask.Thank you
TonyAus
Not a good idea to run without the lock or a plug in its place. When you get the lock out you will see how it works - the flat extension of the lock barrel turns between the selector rods. There is also a felt seal under the lock to prevent transmission oil working its way up. I think that running without the lock and seal might result in a spray of oil up the right and left legs of the driver and passenger respectively. Not good for your Gucci loafers and domestic harmony - particularly if your passenger is of the distaff variety.
GaryP65
Understood. So once I have the unit out should I take it to a locksmith and get a key made? Is that possible? Edited January 2, 2016 by GaryP65 (see edit history)
Ron Lawson
Gary If you send a P/M to Platt-Deutsch he has been able to help others with these keys Evidently they are a security key and blanks are not easy to source Ron

MikeC5
The gears appear to be in decent shape. What kind of oil is in there? Looks a little thin.
GaryP65
Have no idea. Looks low too, no? Isn't there suppose to be a gasket as well?
MikeC5
This thread has some good info on tranny oil viscosity and fill level. http://forums.aaca.org/topic/61392-1922-db-gear-box-problems/?hl=%2Btranny+%2Blevel#entry247750Mine had no gasket either and I suspect when the proper lube is in there a gasket isn't needed.
