Leif Holmberg
I bought this torque ball on e-bay as a late 1956,but I don`t think it`s 1956 ,just becuse my torque ball has rubber on in and out side ,and the universal joint axle hole are about 1/4"-3/8" bigger on this one than on my 1956.I think it must be for later Buick as 1958-1960? Anyone who can measure the universel joint on a later year as 1958-1960.(the casted parts measurment are the same as my 1956 exept for the bigger joint hole)Thanks in advance.Leif in Sweden. lancemb
I can't check my book right now, but if it's a 57 I'd be interested in buying it.
Leif Holmberg
I can`t identify it in my 1959 parts book,i think 1957 are the same type as I have on my 1956.The parts book say late 1956 on that parts numbers, but my guess is that the torque ball not belong to this box with those numbers? When the Torque Ball axle hole are much bigger than on my 1956 I think the splined axle are bigger too to fit this torque ball.Proberly 1958-1960?I hope anyone will do measuring to see if it`s 1958-1959 or 1960.Leif in Sweden. SpecialEducation
I don't remember the shaft sizes off the top of my head, but I do believe there was a mid-year change on that. The aft seal that came with our '56 torque ball kit had a much bigger ID than the OD of the shaft. I'm not sure when ours was built, but based on some of the changes mentioned in the Service Bulletins, ours does not appear to be a 'late' version. I think our drive shaft is about .125" smaller than the seal that we were sold. For what it's worth, I'm not sure this is an instance were a new-old-stock part is desirable. The synthetics degrade over time and modern materials are much better than what was installed back then. In this instance, I think re-vulcanized or reproduction parts are going to provide less trouble in the long run. As much of a pain as the torque ball is to get to, I certainly wouldn't want to be redoing them on a regular basis.
