LAS VEGAS DAVE
As some of you know my current project is the overdrive mod for my 1938 Buick Special. I need to find the proper oil for the rear end. Does anyone have a suggestion, maybe a brand and where to order it. It calls for a hypoid gear oil. DonMicheletti
Just 90 wt, hypoid oil you can get at any parts store is OK
Daves1940Buick56S
Make sure it is EP-4 and you will be OK. Since the rear uses brass washers in the carrier you may want to avoid EP-5, but it may not matter much. If anyone has a firm opinion on brass and EP-5 please weigh in. LAS VEGAS DAVE
I ordered some 80/90 HYPOID GEAR OIL from RESTORATION SUPPLY but it says not for yellow metal. I didn't realize that there was brass washers in the carrier. I can not find any EP4 hypoid gear oil. What will happen if I use the EP5 oil to the brass washers? I thought that yellow metal referred to brass bushings but maybe brass washers is also a concern. Daves1940Buick56S
I should have said GL-4 and GL-5 rather than EP, my bad. I have attached a pretty interesting paper on this subject. Anyhow, GL-4 is out there, here is a link: www.amazon.com/Sta-Lube-SL24239-GL-4-Multi-Purpose-Hypoid/dp/B000M8RYMC Cheers, Dave Transaxle_oil.pdf
LAS VEGAS DAVE
Thank you Dave, I appreciate the link and the info about Gl 4 and GL 5 gear oils. I bought the GL4 oil since that is what is correct for the 38 Buick.
Larry Schramm
If you get some GL1 oil which I think was used on maybe the Ford 8N tractors that should be fine. I got some from Tractor Supply if I remember correctly. Just double check the application. Daves1940Buick56S
Larry: Supposedly GL-1 does not have some of the EP (extreme pressure) additives needed for hypoid gears, although I suppose with our older differentials you could get away with it.
