tbirdr
Can someone tell me what class a 1989 Mercedes Benz 560sl would be enter in a national meet. The 560sl has a soft top and hardtop. Thanks
Eric Wahlberg
The 560SL would be in class 25D, Sports Vehicles; Open 1970-1990. The judges will want to see the car displayed with the soft top in the up position. You may display the hardtop with the car or leave it home. tbirdr
Thank you for the information, I also thought class 25d, but I checked Hershey 2014 results and noticed a 1989 Mercedes won a third junior in class 25E. This made me post the question.
Eric Wahlberg
25E is for Sports Vehicles; Closed 1970-1990, which is where your car would be if shown with the hardtop in place. It looks like you have a choice of classes.
tbirdr
Thank you Eric, I'm sure they will put me in the correct class on show day. I did mention when I register not sure what class.
Vila
You may want to check with AACA headquarters before registering and get written or email confirmation for which class it should be registered. I would then keep the letter or print the email to have confirmation, in the event your are questions on the class you entered it in. If it is a convertible with a removable hardtop, you may have an issue if you install the hardtop and show it in the hardtop class, when it has a removable top. Judges can't dispute a confirmation letter/email.
Restorer32
Probably not a good idea to try to display the hardtop separate from the car at a judged show. Show fields are usually crowded and cars are parked close together. I would check with AACA on which class you would be in. There is a note in the Judges Manual that says " Targa and T tops are considered closed". I suspect your car would still be considered "open" even if it has a full hardtop.
